RATIONAL ADDS ADA 95 FEATURES AND EXPANDS PLATFORM SUPPORT WITH NEW VERSION OF ADA APPLICATION-DEVELOPMENT ENVIRONMENT.SANTA CLARA, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 9, 1995--Rational Software Corporation announced today the next generation of Rational Apex Ada, an integrated software-engineering environment. Rational Apex Ada 2.0 adds support for Ada 95 and now runs on Digital Alpha, HP 9000, and Silicon Graphics work stations, as well as other standard open-systems platforms. Rational Apex is an integrated, interactive, software- engineering environment for controlling the development of complex software systems. Rational Apex Ada 2.0 incorporates new code-generation technology and optimizations from Rational's VADS VADS Visual Arts Data Service VADS Vulcan Air Defense System VADS Verdix Ada Development System VADS Visual Aural Digit Span test VADS Vocabulary Access and Distribution System (CDC) VADS Value Added and Data Services technology, which was acquired as a result of the merger of Rational and Verdix Corporation in March 1994. The new technology provides improved code quality and shares a common set of runtime libraries with the VADS family of cross-compilers. Rational Apex 2.0 also features significant improvements in Ada and mixed-language debugging technology, including the addition of debugging features. Rational Apex Ada 2.0 will be validated under ACVC ACVC Ada Compiler Validation Capability ACVC Atlantic Coast Veterinary Conference ACVC Arms Control Verification Committee ACVC Army Commercial Vehicle Code ACVC Air-Cooled Vault Concept 2.0. Rational Apex Ada 2.0 integrates language-sensitive-editing, optimal recompilation Re`com`pi`la´tion n. 1. A new compilation. , architectural enforcement, configuration management, parallel development support, and a new GUI debugger. With this release, Rational Apex Ada is now available for five major UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). workstations: DEC Alpha under Digital UNIX, HP 9000 under HP/UX HP/UX Hewlett-Packard UNIX operating system HP/UX Unexploded Human Particulate Operating System , IBM RISC RISC in full Reduced Instruction Set Computing Computer architecture that uses a limited number of instructions. RISC became popular in microprocessors in the 1980s. System/6000 under AIX, Silicon Graphics under IRIX, and SunSPARC under Solaris and SunOS. Rational Apex Ada is part of an integrated solution for total lifecycle control of development projects. It works in conjunction with Rational's entire line of development products, including Rational Rose for analysis, design, and implementation, SoDA for automated documentation generation, and TestMate for automated testing and coverage analysis. Ada 95 Support Rational Apex Ada 2.0 represents the second phase of Rational's Ada 95 development plan. The product features new code-generation support for important Ada 95 real-time features, such as protected types. Rational Apex already supports syntactic and initial semantic support for Ada 95, which recently received formal approval as an ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC. (American National Standards Institute See ANSI. (body, standard) American National Standards Institute - (ANSI) The private, non-profit organisation (501(c)3) responsible for approving US standards in many areas, including computers and communications. (2) (International Organization for Standardization, Geneva, Switzerland, www.iso.ch) An organization that sets international standards, founded in 1946. The U.S. member body is ANSI. (International Standards Organization See ISO. ) standard. The new standard adds in-depth support for object-oriented programming as well as significant improvements in support for real-time systems. "Rational is committed to providing full Ada 95 support across our entire product line," said Kevin Nix, marketing manager at Rational. "We are adding Ada 95 support to our products incrementally as part of a series of upgrades to the Rational product line. This release of Rational Apex is just one step in this process, which will culminate with full Ada 95 support in 1996." The next phase of Rational's Ada 95 plan will include code- generation support for object-oriented extensions specified in the Ada 95 standard. The plan concludes with support for the remaining Ada 95 annexes by the middle of 1996. Rational Apex Ada 2.0 also provides full support for Ada 83, making it suitable for customers who plan to start or continue projects in Ada 83 and for customers who plan to migrate from Ada 83 to Ada 95. Pricing and Availability Rational Apex Ada 2.0 will be available in September on Digital, HP, IBM, and Sun Microsystems workstations. It will be available in November for Silicon Graphics workstations. The product will sell for $22,000 (U.S. price) on all platforms.
