RATE OF SERIOUS CRIME DECLINES IN PALMDALE.

The analysis takes population growth into account, so although the actual number of serious ``Part I'' crimes increased from 5,219 to 5,255 -- a 0.7 percent rise -- the rate decreased from 375 per 10,000 residents in 2005 to 356.5 last year.

``I think it shows that the crime prevention and enforcement programs we've put in are working,'' Palmdale sheriff's station Lt. Bobby Denham said.

``It's encouraging, so we're going to continue to expand these programs and probably introduce some new ones,'' Denham said.

The number of homicides -- 15 -- was the same in 2006 as in the previous year.

Rapes were up 21percent, from 48 in 2005 to 58 last year. Burglaries were up 21 percent from 967 to 1,169.

Aggravated assaults were down from 661 in 2005 to 575 last year, a 13 percent decline, and arson was down 13 percent from 62 in 2005 to 54 last year. There were 690 auto thefts in 2006 compared with 764 the previous year, a 10 percent decline.

 regions in the Palmdale's sheriff station's jurisdiction experienced a 3 percent decline in PartI crimes.

There were 12 rapes in those areas compared with eight the previous year, a 50 percent increase.

Aggravated assault in the unincorporated regions declined 20 percent from 174 to 139.
