RASI Announces Regional Airlines At the Forefront of U.S. Air Service Changes Since September 11th.Business Editors WASHINGTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 24, 2002 Regional airlines have played a critical role in maintaining air service at hundreds of American American, river, 30 mi (48 km) long, rising in N central Calif. in the Sierra Nevada and flowing SW into the Sacramento River at Sacramento. An analysis of nearly 1,500 individual U.S. routes reveals that during one of the most dramatic periods in modern aviation history, regional carriers have been at the forefront of air service changes, modifying their schedules at unprecedented rates. While a majority of regional carrier routes -- 59.1% -- received the same air service in January 2002 as 12-months ago, the remainder -- 41.9% -- experienced major qualitative changes. Highlights of the analysis include: -- Regional carriers introduced a total of 100 all-new routes. These markets received no nonstop service 12 months ago. Examples include: Salt Lake City - El Paso El Paso (ĕl pă`sō), city (1990 pop. 515,342), seat of El Paso co., extreme W Tex., on the Rio Grande opposite Juárez, Mex.; inc. 1873. Today Mesa Airlines operates for US Airways Express. ). Seventy-seven (77) of the 100 new routes are served by regional jets (RJ's) exclusively and 20 with turboprops exclusively; -- Regional carriers replaced all major carrier service in 108 markets. Nearly two-thirds (69) of this total were receiving some complementary (joint major and regional carrier) schedules on the same route last year; -- Regional carriers introduced complementary (joint flights with major carriers) schedules on nearly 90 individual routes served exclusively by major carriers one year ago. Examples include: Detroit -Nashville (Northwest Airlink) and Pittsburgh - Louisville (US Airways Express US Airways Express is an airline brand name, rather than a fully certificated airline, and as such, the US Airways Express name is used by several individually owned airlines or airline holding companies which provide regional airline and commuter service for US Airways. ); -- Regional carriers upgraded service from turboprop turboprop: see turbine. turboprop Hybrid engine that provides jet thrust and also drives a propeller. It is similar to the turbojet except that an added turbine, behind the combustion chamber, works through a shaft and speed-reducing gears to turn a to either partial or entirely Regional Jet (RJ) operations in 90 markets. Nevertheless, turboprop aircraft continue to serve a significant share (43.3%) of all U.S. regional markets; -- Regional carriers ceased all service in 128 markets, 47 of which were served exclusively with regional jets (RJ's) in January 2001 and 78 exclusively by turboprops during the same period.
