SEATTLE - There is no truth to the rumor that the only reason the Angels have not pulled any muscles lately is because they don't have any.

They flexed them proudly Tuesday with four home runs, including two from Gary Matthews

The Angels returned their first-place lead to four games over the Mariners.

to last year's World Series title, but had another first-half stumble with the Mariners. He was 0-6 with a 14.32 ERA before going on the disabled list with shoulder tendinitis.

Since returning June 9, Weaver was 2-3 with a 2.79 ERA in nine starts, but his resurgence was no match for the previously homer-starved Angels. The Angels entered with just four home runs in their last 22 games and two of those came Saturday.

Matthews, who knows all about a home-run drought, got things started with a two-run shot to dead center in the second inning. It was his11th home run of the season but first since June 19, a stretch of 36 games. His second home run came in the ninth inning off Mariners' reliever Mark Lowe Mark Christopher Lowe (born June 7, 1983 in Houston, Texas) is a Major League Baseball pitcher for the Seattle Mariners. He made his Major League debut on July 7, 2006 in relief against the Detroit Tigers, loading the bases before striking out the side. .

Maicer Izturis followed Matthews' first home run with one of his own to right, marking the fifth time the Angels hit back-to-back home runs this season.

Although the Angels would score plenty more times, those early runs were all Lackey needed. The right-hander, who continues to cement a reputation as a big-game pitcher, found his form against the Mariners.

Lackey had given up a combined 11 earned runs in his last three starts, with a no-decision and a defeat in his last two outings. But he was able to show the first-half form that earned him his first All-Star nod.

Lackey loaded the bases in the first inning with two outs, but got out of trouble when Richie Sexson flied out to right. He put the first two runners on base in the third inning but Jose Guillen lined out to right and Adrian Beltre grounded into a double play.

Lackey's only other jam came in the eighth inning when the Mariners had runners on first and third with one out, but Beltre again ended things with a 4-6-3 double play.

It was the right-hander's first shutout since July 14 last season against the Tampa Bay Devil Rays The Tampa Bay Devil Rays are a professional baseball team based in St. Petersburg, Florida, Florida. The Devil Rays are a member of the Eastern Division of Major League Baseball's American League. From to the present, the Devil Rays have played in Tropicana Field. . It was Lackey's ninth career complete game and fifth shutout.

Lackey's complete game followed one from Kelvim Escobar in defeat Monday. It was the first time the Angels had back-to-back complete games since July 17-18, 1993. Russ Springer and Mark Langston pulled off the feat at Cleveland, but both were in defeat.

Orlando Cabrera stepped up things in the middle innings with a two-run single in the fourth inning and a solo home run to right in the sixth. While Vladimir Guerrero has been without a home run for 29 games now, Cabrera has two in the last four games.
