The season of El Nino-spawned rains has damaged 14 trails spanning 54 miles in the Ojai Ranger District, which reaches from Ojai on the west to Lake Piru Lake Piru is a lake located in Los Padres National Forest in Ventura County and was created by the construction in 1955 of the Santa Felicia Dam on Piru Creek which is a tributary of the Santa Clara River. on the east and Pine Mountain Pine Mountain may refer to:
The latest work project, planned for National Trails Day on Saturday, will be on lower portions of the Gridley Trail. The 4.3-mile trail begins at the end of Gridley Road in northeast Ojai and ends at Nordhoff Ridge, featuring a moderate climb and then steep switchbacks. ``It's still there, but it's heavily rutted. It's just a vulnerable part of the trail because it's on the side of a canyon,'' said Charlie Robinson Charles Henry Robinson (July 27, 1856 in Westerly, Rhode Island - May 18, 1913) was a 19th century Major League Baseball catcher during the 1884 & 1885 seasons. The trail bed needs repairing, and water bars that control erosion need replacing. Robinson noted that the water bars actually will be improved, with wood and rubber slats replacing rocks. ``The problem that we've had in the past is mountain bikes going around to avoid a bump and that widens the trail and defeats the purpose of the water bar,'' he said. Many of the trails on the Ojai Ranger District's priority list for repairs are multi-use trails open for hikers, equestrians and mountain bikers. So they get a lot of use in summer. The trails are popular often because of their access from Ojai, Santa Paula Santa Paula (săn`tə pôl`ə), city (1990 pop. 25,062), Ventura co., S Calif., on the Santa Clara River in a fertile valley that yields citrus fruits, avocados, vegetables, flowers, nursery products, and walnuts; laid out 1875, inc. and camping areas in Rose Valley, Wheeler Gorge and the Matilija Wilderness, Robinson noted. ``We've had a crew on since the middle of March,'' he said. ``We're shooting for the end of September. That way we will be ahead of the rain.'' Aiding the effort was a volunteer project on California Trails Day in April and the continued work of The Crew, an Ojai-based youth employment program. A county summer youth program is expected to provide a crew and the Forest Service is working on a plan with the California Conservation Corps The California Conservation Corps (CCC) is a state agency modeled after the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and was initiated as a pet project in 1976 by then Governor Jerry Brown. , Robinson said. Volunteers for the Gridley Trail project on Saturday should meet by 8:15 a.m. at the Ojai Ranger District station, 1190 E. Ojai Ave. Car pools will be formed to transport volunteers. Tools will be provided, but volunteers are encouraged to bring shovels, small pruning pruning, the horticultural practice of cutting away an unwanted, unnecessary, or undesirable plant part, used most often on trees, shrubs, hedges, and woody vines. saws or picks, if they have such implements. Volunteers should wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts, sturdy shoes or boots, work gloves and a hat. They also need to provide water and lunch. For more information, call (805) 646-4348. Robinson said volunteers are needed beyond National Trails Day. ``We're serious about having folks call in. If they can't make it Saturday, we're glad to have them another day,'' he said. |
