Hoover High of Glendale's senior quarterback scored two touchdowns in Thursday night's Pacific League football showdown with rival Glendale. But it was the Tornadoes' final series, one that came up five yards short of the end zone, that was perhaps the defining drive of Rangel's career.

With Hoover protecting a seven-point lead, Rangel and running backs Jonathan Mai and Vladimir Akopian Vladimir Akopian (Russian: Владимир Акопян); born December 7, 1971 in Baku) is a leading Armenian chess Grandmaster.  orchestrated or·ches·trate

``It feels great. I promised these guys the bell was coming home and now it's right here where it belongs at Hoover,'' said Rangel, who helped the Tornadoes improve to 32-44-2 all-time against Glendale (0-7, 0-10).

``I'm so proud of these guys for continuing to play hard and they showed a lot of heart. We just wanted to move the ball and stay focused and play hard until the final whistle A simple whistle is a woodwind instrument which produces sound from a stream of forced air.

Hoover (1-9, 1-6), which snapped a 14-game losing streak, trailed 8-6 entering the final quarter. But a bobbled snap on a Glendale punt attempt was recovered by Steve Wheeler and advanced to the Nitros' 2-yard line. Rangel, who gave Hoover a 6-0 lead on a 7-yard run in the first quarter, scored his second touchdown from 1 yard out to help the Tornadoes regain the lead.

``We needed a big special teams play and we hadn't gotten one all year,'' said Hoover coach Dennis Hughes, whose team had scored a combined 26 points in its first nine games. ``But we got one then.''
