RANGE ON THE HOME IN GLENDALE, NEW IDEAS HEAT UP THE KITCHEN.Byline: Martin S. Gonzalez Staff Writer More than ever, the kitchen has become a gathering place - not just a space to prepare a meal. This year's two-day Pasadena Chapter of the American Society of Interior Designers The American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) is the oldest and largest professional association for interior designers. Through education, knowledge sharing, advocacy, community building and outreach, the Society strives to advance the interior design profession and, in the Showcase of Kitchens and Interiors Tour will feature a collection of kitchens not only displaying the latest in culinary gadgets and design innovations, but representing a consideration for the complete space in a kitchen. The one Glendale home on this year's tour is a Mission-inspired masterpiece. Working in the 1920s home with lush planting and a Spanish influence, designer Ria Jacob has created a space made not only for entertaining, but for everyday leisure. An addition was built onto the home, but Jacob opted for creating a separate garden room next to the kitchen that doubles as a breakfast area and entertainment room during frequent visits from family and friends. With its high-beamed ceiling and soothing palette of cream, beige, mocha Mocha (mō`kə), town (1990 est. pop. 2,000), S Yemen, a port on the Red Sea. Derived from a branch of the radical English Quakers (see Society of Friends), the movement was brought to the U.S. styles, coupled with gorgeous green granite, Verde Marcata, on the center cooking island. In a refreshing change, Jacob placed the professional model six-burner Russell drop-in range on the center island instead of against one of the center walls, allowing for more interaction between the chef and his guests. It's the perfect place for throwing a cooking-class party with friends. ``Unlike other homes I design,'' said Jacob, ``the homeowners actually cook in their kitchen.'' Jacob said the homeowners did a lot of research before settling on the professional model range, citing its ultra-low simmer feature and unique one-plane grate design as big draws. With one continuous grate over the cooking surface, pots and pans can be easily slid off the flame and larger pots are also more easily accommodated. Through thoughtful design and the use of first-rate appliances, Jacob has converted what was an old farm-style space with little storage room into a well-honed cooking oasis - both inviting and extremely efficient. Large full-extension glide drawers hold a plethora of pots under the range, and other pots hang from the range hood, all within reach and ready for action. Other, deeper drawers accommodate a wide array of cooking oils and vinegars, and a special spice drawer next to the sink just behind the range helps keep all necessary condiments and flavor enhancers within arm's reach reach of the arm; the distance the arm can reach. A super-quiet and energy-efficient Miele dishwasher is just one of the four Miele appliances that add a European flair to Jacob's kitchen. The kitchen also features a Miele oven, and, in an ingenious space-saving move, Jacob incorporates a Miele door-model washer and dryer that install flush with the countertop in the small laundry center that also serves as a pantry. With the washer and dryer neatly tucked away under the countertop, the space can be used as an additional prep area or, as Jacob noted, as the serving area for an outdoor buffet since the laundry room A laundry room (also called a utility room) is a room where clothes are washed. In a modern home, a laundry room would be equipped with an automatic washing machine and clothes dryer, and often a large basin, called a laundry tub, for hand-washing delicate articles of clothing such leads out onto the pool area. Indeed, no space has been overlooked in a kitchen that is undoubtedly a dream to cook in.
