RAND McNALLY DIVERSIFIES WITH NICHOLSTONE ACQUISITION
 SKOKIE, Ill., July 31 /PRNewswire/ -- Skokie-based Rand McNally

today announced it has acquired Nicholstone Holdings, Inc. of Nashville, Tenn., parent company of Nicholstone Software Services Corp., Nicholstone Looseleaf Co., and Nicholstone Bindery. Rand McNally President and CEO Andrew McNally IV said those companies are now part of Rand McNally's Book Manufacturing Group.
Book Manufacturing provides printing, binding and distribution services to an international roster of leading publishers of encyclopedias, dictionaries, textbooks, direct mail publications, children's books, and industrial catalogs and directories. Its manufacturing facilities are in Versailles, Ky.; Taunton, Mass.; and Indianapolis.
Nicholstone, with approximately $70 million in annual sales, specializes in the manufacturing, packaging and distribution of computer software and documentation, and in specialty printing and binding for the educational publishing and home entertainment industries. Its facilities are in Nashville and in Fremont, Calif.
"There is," McNally said, "a rapidly escalating crossover of traditional educational publishers into multimedia products. Meanwhile, software publishers are increasingly moving into education and entertainment. We expect to have the latest technology and capabilities to meet both trends in everything from printing to packaging. We intend to be the one-stop supplier for all parties."
McNally said that acquiring Nicholstone is "part of a long-term strategy by which we are providing more services for existing customers while reaching out to new ones and adapting to the changing technology that is re-shaping the publishing industry. We expect to be announcing further developments in this direction in the not-too-distant future."
Nicholstone President and CEO Jim Thaden pointed out, "For the software publishing industry we will now be able to more rapidly pursue our goal of becoming a leading 'turnkey supplier.' Through Rand McNally we will have more diversified capabilities and international distribution."
Financial details of the Nicholstone acquisition were not disclosed.
