RAMBUS RDRAM MEMORY INTERFACE USED IN HP ALPHASERVER.

Rambus Inc. (Nasdaq:RMBS), Los Altos, Calif., a provider of chip-to-chip interface products and services, has announced that its RDRAM(R) memory interface is in use in HP's most advanced AlphaServer family to date. Paired with HP's new EV7 Alpha microprocessor, RDRAM memory is the only memory solution in the market that is capable of delivering the combination of high-performance bandwidth and low-latency requirements needed by HP's highly available and highly scalable AlphaServer family.

"RDRAM memory, coupled with the HP EV7 Alpha microprocessor, provides the next level of advanced supercomputing necessary for mission-critical, data intensive applications," said Laura Stark, vice president of Rambus' Memory Interface Division. "RDRAM continues to be the memory of choice in highly stressful computing environments as it far surpasses other memory solutions in performance and reliability."

The HP AlphaServer family serves a variety of applications from supercomputers used in scientific research such as genetic mapping and satellite map analysis, to database servers, telecommunications and other demanding vertical industry and horizontal solutions. RDRAM provides the high-bandwidth memory and fast access time required for these and other data-intensive applications.

"HP selected RDRAM over other memory solutions as it provided the highest possible per-pin bandwidth and capacities of up to 4 terabyte of main memory," said John Bennett, director of Alpha Systems marketing for HP's Business Critical Systems. "RDRAM's low pin count enabled us to eliminate an external memory chipset and integrate the memory controller directly onto the new Alpha microprocessor to achieve extremely high bandwidth and low latency."

Compared to previous generations of AlphaServer microprocessors, the Alpha EV7 processor achieves higher performance and scalability through the use of dual integrated memory controllers. Each of the two memory controllers on the EV7 supports four 18-bit RDRAM channels and offers each processor 12.8 Gigabytes/sec of raw bandwidth. To enhance the reliability of these systems, two more channels of RDRAM are available in a memory RAID (Redundant Array of Independent Disks) configuration as backup for fault tolerance purposes. In total, each HP AlphaServer system can accommodate ten 800MHz RDRAM channels that offer 16 Gigabytes/sec memory bandwidth combined--making it the highest performance system available in the industry.
