RAMADA INTERNATIONAL ANNOUNCES FORMATION OF NEW HOTEL BRAND
'RENAISSANCE HOTELS & RESORTS' OFFICIALLY DEBUT JAN. 1, 1993
NEW YORK, Nov. 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Top executives of Hong Kong-based Ramada International Hotels & Resorts announced today that the company's portfolio of more than 120 hotels and resorts will be repositioned under two separate and distinct brands effective Jan. 1, 1993: Ramada International Hotels & Resorts and Renaissance Hotels & Resorts. In a letter released earlier to property owners, general managers and company executives, Wilfried (Bill) Grau, president and CEO of Ramada International, explained:
"Today, 11 years after the inauguration of the first two Renaissance properties, we have the strength in numbers and the momentum in properties under development to be able to separate Ramada and Renaissance into individual brands, each with distinctive product attributes and customer bases," said Grau.
Erwin J. Rieck, Ramada International executive vice president and COO, said, "Proprietary research commissioned by our company in North America, Europe and Asia has revealed that customers and travel planners are confused by the name 'Ramada' in connection with 'Renaissance.' With Renaissance we offer a product that is in the luxury segment of the market, as reflected in our advertising. While the customer clearly recognizes Ramada as a strong player in the mid-priced hotel sector. Thus, the decision has been made and a plan put into motion to reposition into two brands: Ramada International Hotels & Resorts, consisting of 78 full-service properties positioned in the mid-priced sector, and Renaissance Hotels & Resorts, consisting of nearly 50 properties, competing in the luxury tier."
The first two Renaissance hotels opened in 1981 in Denver, Colo., and Hamburg, Germany and were introduced in connection with the Ramada brand in order to capitalize on the marketing expertise and reservations system that had brought Ramada accelerated growth and success during the 1970s.
Over the years Ramada International has become known as one of the fastest growing international hotel companies in the world, achieving an average growth in number of rooms of 24.5 percent annually since 1983.
