RAISING FUNDS TO FIND CURE.

``I have three sisters-in-law who participated in the three-day walk two years ago,'' Harvey said. ``When they asked me to join them and walk in memory of my mother-in-law, Alice Harvey, who died of cancer in 2000, I thought it was a great idea.''

Each participant had to raise at least $2,100 for breast cancer awareness and research programs. Harvey raised more than $2,700.

While trying to raise the money, Harvey gave presentations about breast cancer awareness at the base Officers' Spouses Club and at the Health and Wellness Center.

Harvey, a mother of three whose husband is deployed overseas, trained for four months to prepare for the walk. She walked 14 miles a day, alternating days with 20-mile bike rides.

She had to plan her training around her children's school schedules and extracurricular activities.

``Everyone knows someone affected by cancer,'' Harvey said. ``It has been worth every effort to know that we all strike a blow against breast cancer when we get involved.''
