RAINSTORM APPROACHES SOUTHLAND.

Byline: Erik N. Nelson Staff Writer

Rain may dampen holiday shopping trips today and Sunday, but forecasters expect skies to clear and freeways to dry by the time returning travelers clog area roadways Sunday afternoon.

A storm system from the west will combine with cold air from the northern ocean to bring between 0.5 inch to 1 inch of rain to moisture-starved coastal and valley areas of Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850. , said Eric Hilgendorf, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

If it performs as predicted, the storm will bring more rain than in the season's first significant rainfall on Nov. 13, which amounted to about a third of an inch and was the bulk of this season's total rainfall of 0.45 inches, well behind last year's total of 1.2 inches as of Nov. 23.

Normal precipitation for downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  is 2.3 inches for the same period.

As the northern Pacific storm headed for Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region, , it stirred up gusty gust·y

winds and choppy surf and offered a possibility of snow for ski resorts in the region.

The dearth of precipitation so far this season has dried up hope for some who depend on chilly weather for their livelihoods. Dick Kun, president of Snow Summit at Big Bear Lake, said he believes that the more forecasters anticipate a storm in advance, the less likely it will materialize.

``They're backing off the forecast,'' Kun said Friday. ``We might make a little snow tonight, but we're not real optimistic for the next several days.''

Along the coast, the surf was energized by the distant storm, rising as high as 14 feet on the Central Coast and 10 feet on Los Angles County beaches on Thanksgiving Day. Local swells could hit eight feet today and Sunday, forecasters said.

But the 8-to-10 mph northwest winds along Zuma Beach actually broke up waves, making for poor surfing conditions Friday, said Mike McIlroy, an ocean lifeguard specialist with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department This article is about the Los Angeles County Sherriff's Department, not to be confused with the smaller Los Angeles County Police

.

``The waves are affected by wind chop,'' he said. ``It throws a lot of cross swell into the wave, it kind of breaks it up,'' which kept many surfers away from the beach Friday, he said.
