``Eventually, the water loosens the rock and they fall down - it's mostly rocks,'' said Lt. Gregg Sabalone of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  County Sheriff's Department's Lost Hills station. Forecasters expect sunny skies today, a welcome break in an unusually wet Southern California Southern California, also colloquially known as SoCal, is the southern portion of the U.S. state of California. Centered on the cities of Los Angeles and San Diego, Southern California is home to nearly 24 million people and is the nation's second most populated region,  winter.

So far this season, 12.11 inches of rain have fallen at the Los Angeles Civic Center, compared to a normal 7.3 inches.

On Saturday night in the Santa Clarita Valley area, heavy rains caused a mudslide on Placerita Canyon Road, blocking eastbound traffic for about two hours, said Officer Ken Lane of the California Highway Patrol highway patrol

Officials said there were an unusually high number of traffic mishaps Sunday because of the rain, including several fender benders and vehicle spin-outs on the rain-slick Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964.  and the Antelope Valley Freeway The Antelope Valley Freeway is a freeway in Los Angeles and Kern counties in southern California. It is signed as California State Highway 14 along its length. It connects Greater Los Angeles to the rapidly developing Antelope Valley.  in Santa Clarita.

Forecasters predicted a 30 percent chance of evening showers Sunday night, but the rainfall was expected to end by midnight, clearing the way for sunny skies during much of the week.

``This is the absolute tail end of this mother,'' said meteorologist Bill Hoffer of the National Weather Service.

Today is expected to be partly cloudy with patchy fog, but the sun is expected to peek out by this afternoon, bringing high temperatures of 63 degrees, Hoffer said.

Tonight should be clear with patchy, late night fog and a low of 48 degrees, Hoffer said.

Tuesday should be similar to today, with patchy morning fog and otherwise partly cloudy skies and a high temperature of 69 degrees.

Hoffer did warn that Thursday could be breezy through the passes and canyons in Los Angeles.

Surfers also should beware that the National Weather Service's heavy surf advisory is in effect through this afternoon for the coasts along Santa Barbara, Ventura, Los Angeles and Orange counties and including the Channel Islands, Hoffer said.

``That is due to this Pacific storm that has been plaguing this area for the last couple of days,'' he said.

High swells of 13 to 15 feet were reported over the outer waters, and along west-facing beaches surfers should expect 5- to 8-foot surf with local sets possibly as high as 10 feet, said Hoffer, who expects the surf to decrease during the day as the storm system pushes east to Nevada, Idaho and Utah.
