It wasn't hard to break rain records on Friday - with Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  rarely receiving downpours the first week of September, said Bruce Rockwell, a meteorologist for the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

On Friday, Lancaster recorded 0.78 inches of rainfall - beating its 0.70 record for the same day in 1963, Rockwell said. Oxnard also tied its 0.04 record from 1963. Trace amounts of rain were reported throughout the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

A low-pressure system is pulling in moist air from the south, weather experts said, causing the humidity and rain mostly in trace amounts.

But don't expect the cooler temperatures to last long, Rockwell said. Beginning Sunday through Tuesday, temperatures are expected to rise to the mid-90s to 105 in the San Fernando Valley.

To provide relief in the intense heat, the city's Department of Recreation and Parks plans to keep the 19 local swimming pools open beyond their usual closing date shortly after Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. Public recreational swimming will continue at least through Sept. 13 and may even be extended through Sept. 20, said Joe Batarse, a spokesman for the Department of Recreation and Parks.
