The Chatsworth depot also will serve as a community center that provides child care and contains a local history museum, event organizers said. ``This is the hub of Chatsworth,'' said Councilman Hal Bernson Hal Bernson served as Los Angeles City Councilman for the 12th district. Veterans of Foreign Wars members were greeted by cheers and loud applause as they dedicated a 3-1/2-foot-tall granite memorial to all veterans and a 40 foot-tall flagpole at the depot, located at 10040 Old Depot Plaza Road on 13 acres west of Canoga Avenue, between Lassen and Devonshire streets. Although the child-care center will be open in about three weeks and residents already can catch the Metrolink commuter trains at the depot, work remains to complete the interior. Long-term plans are for the depot to include businesses to serve commuters, such as a dry cleaner, a coffee shop and a convenience store. Officials said they are unsure when the depot will be fully operational. Even though work remains, Bernson said he looked at the celebration as the culmination of six years of effort. He spearheaded the $1.7 million depot project with the support of the Chatsworth Chamber of Commerce, Historical Society and other organizations. Cherise McDonough, the director of Transit Tots Childcare Center, said the center will employ about 20 and can care for as many as 90 youngsters, ranging from 6-weeks-old babies to 5-year-olds. The festive event Saturday featured tours of the child care center and of displays inside the depot of Chatsworth-inspired art and black-and-white photographs of the town.
