RADIO LISTENERS PLEDGE $273,000 FOR USO CENTER.

, station officials said Saturday.

Listeners of KRTH-FM (101.1) and KNX-AM (1070) made the pledges during a fund-raising radiothon between 6 a.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday. This year's event raised about $70,000 more than last year's.

``It was phenomenal,'' said Howard Freshman, director of marketing and promotions at KNX. ``We're very excited, and the people at the USO are ecstatic.''

Freshman predicted the final tally could reach $300,000 because some people send in checks without having called in pledges.

About 25,000 troops came through LAX last year and were able to use the USO facility to nap, snack or call home before boarding flights. Going into this year's radiothon, organizers had worried that revelations from the Iraq prisoner abuse Prisoner abuse is the mistreatment of persons while they are under arrest or incarcerated. Abuse falling into this category includes:
  • Physical abuse: Needless beating, hitting, or other Corporal punishment.
 scandal might erode fund raising, Freshman said.

But callers indicated just the opposite, he said. Many said they were calling to back the majority of U.S. troops not involved in the abuse.

``The troops have taken such a hit this week - and they wanted to show their support,'' he said, adding that many callers said they had friends and family on the battle lines Battle Lines may refer to:

Staffed by volunteers, the center is open to military men and women 18 hours a day, letting them relax by sprawling on comfortable couches and watching big-screen TV.
