RADIATION SYSTEMS ANNOUNCES AWARDS TOTALING $11.7 MILLION

STERLING, Va. March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Radiation Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: RADS), today announced that its Universal Antennas Division in Richardson, Texas, has definitized a contract from Cornell University which was originally booked at $7.7 million for $8.4 million. The contract is to provide the upgrading of the radio telescope at Arecibo, Puerto Rico. The program will provide an 85-foot diameter aluminum dome suspended from the feed support platform, which in turn is suspended by a cable 450 feet above the 1,000-foot diameter reflector. The 20-month program includes the civil works, cable suspension and structural reinforcement associated with the added weight of the dome. The upgrading is a step toward providing increased sensitivity of the telescope, particularly at higher operating frequencies.
Universal Antennas Division also received a letter of intent from the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) to provide a 20-meter diameter radio telescope for $2.3 million and an option for an additional system. The telescope will be located at the NRAO facility at Green Bank, W.Va. This telescope will operate in conjunction with another telescope previously installed by Universal Antennas in Hawaii for the study of the crustal dynamics of the earth's surface. This program will be jointly executed with the Precision Controls Division of Radiation Systems, which will provide the positioning control system for the antenna structure.
In addition, Radiation Systems' CSA Antenna Systems Division of Kent, United Kingdom, has been awarded a contract for the supply of 50-foot telescopic masts for the U.S. Air Force's Tropo/Satellite Support Radio System. The contract is valued at $1.0 million and includes options for an additional $1.7 million. It will provide tactical communications units with a complete lightweight line-of- sight microwave radio system. The equipment supplied by CSA is unique. It will enable a two-person crew to set a 15 GHz antenna at a height of 50 feet within 15 minutes under field conditions.
Richard E. Thomas, chairman and chief executive officer, stated that the telescope contracts show the fine reputation which Radiation Systems holds in the scientific community. These contracts, along with the current Green Bank telescope contract and previous radio telescope contracts, show that we are the world leader in construction of precision antennas for scientific application. Thomas also noted that the contract for the mast design is based on CSA's successful RCARRYMASTS range of composite telescopic masts, well over a thousand of which are already in service with the U.S. military.
Radiation Systems, Inc., designs, manufactures and installs a broad range of antenna turnkey systems and components for radar, air traffic control, tactical military, satellite communications, terrestrial microwave and other specialized uses throughout the world.
