New ACE-2002 Optimized to Deliver Entire Gamut of Carrier-Provided

Business Services

RAD Data Communications RAD Data Communications (also known as "RAD") is a privately held corporation, based in Tel Aviv, Israel, that designs and manufacturers specialized networking equipment. It was founded in 1981 by Zohar Zisapel and his brother, Yehuda. , a leader in unique access solutions, today announced three new major interworking (standard) interworking - Systems or components, possibly from different origins, working together to perform some task. Interworking depends crucially on standards to define the interfaces between the components.  capabilities (Frame Relay A high-speed packet switching protocol used in wide area networks (WANs). Providing a granular service of up to DS3 speed (45 Mbps), it has become popular for LAN to LAN connections across remote distances, and services are offered by most major carriers. , HDLC (High-level Data Link Control) A data link protocol from ISO for point-to-point communications over serial links. Derived from IBM's SDLC protocol, HDLC has been the basis for numerous protocols including X.25, ISDN, T1, SS7, GSM, CDPD, PPP and others. , and transparent LAN), alongside existing voice/TDM and native ATM capabilities of the company's top-of-the-line ACE-2002 Multiservice ATM Access Concentrator.

The ACE-2002, a member of RAD's ACE product family of NTUs and ATM access concentrators, is fully modular and can be used as a carrier-owned demarcation device or as a corporate concentrator connected to the public ATM network.

"The enhanced unit provides complete integration and concentration of data and voice requirements into an ATM access network," said Motty Anavi, director of product management at RAD Data Communications, Inc. "In making these improvements to the ACE-2002, RAD essentially added the last cornerstone of interworking support, with the end result proving to be a premier solution for interworking with ATM networks. The ACE-2002 can fully support all services that carriers provide to their business customers."

RAD's enhanced ACE-2002 offers Frame Relay capabilities that include both service and network interworking functions (FRF FRF

5 and FRF8). As such, carriers are afforded the option to either utilize ATM strictly as a transport, or to interoperate ATM with Frame Relay - thereby allowing business customers to preserve their existing Frame Relay investments. Additionally, carriers can provide Frame Relay along with LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  and voice support, ensuring that the three most prevalent services used by business customers are provided.

Other improvements to the ACE-2002 include OC-12 and IMA (Interactive Multimedia Association, Annapolis, MD) An earlier trade association founded in 1988 originally as the Interactive Video Industry Association. It provided an open process for adopting existing technologies and was involved in subjects such as networked services, scripting  (Inverse Multiplexing over ATM) support. While the previous version of the ACE-2002 only supported speeds of up to OC-3, the enhanced ACE-2002 allows for interfacing with OC-12 networks. IMA support allows carriers to multiplex lower speed lines together - thus bridging the gap between T1 and T3 speeds.
