VALENCIA - Forget kilometers. The K at the registration festivities fes·tiv·i·ty
n. pl. fes·tiv·i·ties
1. A joyous feast, holiday, or celebration; a festival.

2. The pleasure, joy, and gaiety of a festival or celebration.

leading up to today's Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  Marathon clearly stood for kids on Saturday.

While their parents picked up bib bib - BibTeX  numbers and timing chips for the 26.2-mile run, the youngest athletes at the Sports and Fitness Expo at the Valencia Hyatt found their way to the Kid K Fun Run table, where their eyes grew big at the mention of goody bags and medals.

``The kids are excited because a lot of their parents are doing the same thing and they feel included,'' said Kathryn Torres, a Santa Clarita city employee who helped register the children. ``But mostly, they're excited about getting their numbers. And the goody bags.''

Unlike the more mature runners, who are identified by their bib numbers, every bib worn by the 12-and-under racers boasts a number 1. And at the end of the single lap around the track at Hart High School Hart High School may refer to:
  • Hart High School — Newhall, California
  • Hart High School — Hart, Michigan
  • Hart County High School — Munfordville, Kentucky
  • Hart County High School — Hartwell, Georgia
, all the children receive a bag filled with snacks, trinkets and a medal.

For many others running in events at the 8th annual Santa Clarita Marathon, the rewards will be less tangible.

For Valencia resident Howard Daniels, the popular event is now a family affair. Both he and his wife plan to run in the half-marathon, while the couple's two young daughters will show their stuff in the Kid K.

``The kids like it because they get to see their friends and they get a medal,'' Daniels said. ``But for me, running helps keep the weight down. That's the best part about running. I run so I can eat.''

More than 2,200 people participated in the full and half-marathons last year, a total organizers hope to top today. The two main races begin at 7 a.m. at Lang Lang language
LANG Louisiana Army National Guard
Lang Langobardian (linguistics)

 Station Road in Canyon Country.

While there is no race day registration for the marathon and half-marathon, participants can sign up for the 5K Run/Walk and the Kid K starting at 6 a.m. at Newhall Park - the finish line for the 26.2-mile race.
