Byline: Judy O'Rourke Special to the Daily News

SANTA CLARITA Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  - Workers aiming to beat the fall rainy season are fixing a damaged flood control channel Flood control channels are a series of large, concrete, and empty (except when a flood is actually present) open-air channels that extend a ways below the street levels of some larger cities, so that if and when a flood occurs, the flood will run into the channels, and proceed to be  in the South Fork South Fork may refer to:

riverbed that slows the flow of water headed downstream.

A section of the county-maintained channel near the junction of Magic Mountain Parkway and San Fernando Road San Fernando Road is a major street in the city and county of Los Angeles. It starts off in Castaic as The Old Road, passing through Santa Clarita and the Newhall Pass, where upon its intersection with Sierra Highway near the junction of the Golden State (I-5) and the  suffered the effects of long-term erosion and pounding storms last winter.

Water gushes through concrete-lined channels with tremendous force during and after storms. The section under repair is terraced like a series of little waterfalls.

Flood control channels reduce erosion on the riverbanks and help to protect bridges above the waterways.

The official rainy season starts Saturday and ends April 15, said Mark Lindemann, a senior public works inspector for the city.

The work may appear to spill over to the bike trail under Magic Mountain Parkway, but Lindemann said the trail will remain intact, ready to host runners during the upcoming Santa Clarita Marathon.

Ken Pellman, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Works The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works (LACDPW) is responsible for the construction and operation of Los Angeles County's roads, building safety, sewerage, and flood control. , said the nearly $1.1 million project began in August and should be complete by the end of October. The faulty section lies under Six Flags California's Magic Mountain on the South Fork River, a tributary of the Santa Clara River Santa Clara River may refer to:

A short distance away, the rivers meet. Pellman said if the damage is not fixed, the effects of the rushing water would be magnified when the stream joined the larger body of riverbed.
