Elton B. Stephens Sr., founder of the subscription agency named after his initials, EBSCO Industries EBSCO Industries is a privately held, widely diversified corporation with headquarters in Birmingham, Alabama. It was founded in 1944 by Elton B. Stephens (hence the EBSCO acronym Elton B Stephens COmpany). . The Birmingham, Alabama-based company is familiar to innumerable newsletter and specialized-information publishers, as well, of course, to thousands of magazines and libraries.

He was 93.

From a childhood milking cows in rural Clio, Stephens built a financial empire with an eclectic e·clec·tic

In 1944, Stephens and his wife, Alys Robinson Stephens, formed Military Service Co. to sell magazine subscriptions at military bases.

In addition to the division which provides publication-subscription services to 50,000 libraries, EBSCO is now made up of 21 divisions producing everything from muskets to fishing lures In terms of sport fishing, a lure is an object attached to the end of the fishing line and designed to resemble and move like an item of fish prey. Lures are equipped with one or more single,double, or treble hooks that are used to hook fish when they attack the lure.  to furniture and high-tech graphics.

EBSCO has more than $1 billion in annual sales. Forbes listed it as one of the nation's largest private companies.
