R. KELLY, JAGGED EDGE TOP WINNERS.

It was two for two for r&b crooners R. Kelly and Jagged Edge, who won two trophies each at the 15th annual Soul Train Music Awards The Soul Train Music Awards is an annual award show aired in national syndication that honors the best in Black music and entertainment. It is produced by the producers of Soul Train, the program from which it takes its name.  on Wednesday at the Shrine downtown.

With hip-hop, rap and modern r&b now the driving forces in the record industry, the awards program is increasing in audience each year. Hosted by Queen Latifah

Still, big winner Kelly was a no-show. Same with producer-rapper Dr. Dre, who won the trophy for r&b/soul or rap album for ``Dr. Dre - 2001,'' but was not in attendance to accept the statuette.

The ceremony will air Saturday on KTLA-TV (Channel 5). Winners in the 10 categories were decided by several thousand urban-music radio, retail and record company staffers.

Responding to questions backstage about the trio's many lineup changes, the group's Kelly Rowland said, ``God has his way of weeding out the negative.''

Harmony quartet Jagged Edge got the honors for best r&b/soul single, group, band or duo, for ``Let's Get Married,'' and best r&b/soul album, group, band or duo, for ``J.E. Heartbreak.''

Backstage, the group, which includes twins Brian and Brandon Casey, said the award is a sign that its music was truly reaching fans. ``It means so much to us all,'' Brian Casey said.

 won for best r&b/soul single, female, for ``Open My Heart.'' She said backstage that gospel music would always play an important part in the pop world.

``It transcends everything,'' Adams said. ``It's always been part of our history. All we're doing as (contemporary) gospel artists is carrying on the tradition.''

Meanwhile, crooner R. Kelly expressed more worldly concerns on his hit, ``I Wish,'' which won for best r&b/soul single, male, and his album, ``TP-2.Com,'' named best r&b/soul album, male.

In the best r&b/soul or rap new artist category, Nelly took the honor for the chart-topping ``Country Grammar'' single. Backstage, the rapper said the Soul Train Award ``makes you feel like somebody's listening, someone appreciates what you're doing.''

Rapper Mystikal, whose ``Shake Ya Ass'' won for best r&b/soul or rap music rap music or hip-hop, genre originating in the mid-1970s among black and Hispanic performers in New York City, at first associated with an athletic style of dancing, known as breakdancing.  video, felt the same, adding that his laid-back style evolved from ``listening to all the rappers out there and watching James Brown
