R-G wins seven first-place ONPA awards.


Byline: The Register-Guard

WELCHES - The Register-Guard won seven first-place awards for its news stories and photographs, as well as a second-place award for general excellence, in the 2006 contest of the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association.

The awards, for work published in 2005, were announced at the association's annual conference on Friday. The Register-Guard competed in the division for newspapers with daily circulation of more than 25,001 copies.

 won a first-place award in photo essays for photos of Alex Ghenis, who became a quadriplegic quadriplegic /quad·ri·ple·gic/ (-ple´jik)

Photographer Chris Pietsch won a first-place award in the news photo category with a picture of police finding a dead homeless man.

Reporter Mark Baker won a first-place award in the feature personality story category for his piece on Ghenis.

Former reporter Joe Harwood won in the silk purse category, which recognizes writers who make the best of unpromising circumstances. Harwood wrote an article about the Eugene Celebration The Eugene Celebration is an annual community celebration and civic event held in downtown Eugene, Oregon, United States. Featuring bands and performers from throughout the Pacific Northwest, the three-day festival is held in early September and attracts more than 40,000 attendees  parade in verse, along the lines of a Dr. Seuss Noun 1. The newspaper won second-place awards for religion coverage by Wright, a local column by Bob Welch There are a number of famous people of this name including:

It won third-place awards for headline writing by Christine Sherk, coverage of business and economic issues by Joe Mosley, lifestyle coverage by Baker, daily sports page and sports page for Sunday editions by the sports staff, a sports story by Curtis Anderson, a sports photo and photo essay by Pietsch, religion coverage by Wright, best writing by Susan Palmer, public service journalism by Winston Ross and a silk purse story by Baker.

The Register-Guard won honorable mentions for a special section or issue by the sports staff, a sports photo by Pietsch and a photo essay by Kevin Clark.

The Statesman Journal of Salem won first place for general excellence in The Register-Guard's division, and The Oregonian of Portland placed third.

Competing in smaller- circulation categories, a number of other Lane County area newspaper won awards.

The Springfield News won awards for educational coverage, personality feature story, news photo, news photo, writing, silk purse story and page one design.

The West Lane News in Veneta won awards for section front or inside page design, special section or issue, feature photo, enterprise reporting, religion coverage, feature personality story, editorial page, local column, page one design, headline writing, sports story, religion coverage, lifestyle coverage, news photo, general feature story, writing and feature photo.

The Tri-County News in Junction City won awards for headline writing, lifestyle coverage, general feature story, editorial, educational coverage, lifestyle coverage, news photo, general feature story, editorial, editorial page, local column, writing, page one design, section front or inside page design, headline writing, religion coverage and public service journalism.

The Cottage Grove Sentinel won awards for coverage of business and economic issues, and educational coverage.

The Creswell Chronicle won awards for writing and feature photo.
