One in Four Chicago Businesses Have Been Affected by Viruses

CHICAGO -- Qwest Communications International Inc. (NYSE: Q) today announced the enhancement of the Qwest suite of business class virtual private network, firewall and security services with new anti-virus/anti-spam (AVAS) solutions. A recent local survey by Impulse Research shows that more than one in four Chicago-area businesses have been impacted by a network virus. Eighty-one percent of Chicago respondents reported that viruses have accounted for up to a half day of downtime, another 16 percent indicate that one-to-two whole days of productivity were lost, and 23 percent indicate that the corresponding loss in productivity represented more than ten percent of the business's daily revenue. Sixty-four percent of Chicago businesses also reported that unsolicited "spam" e-mail is a problem. For 42 percent of respondents, more than ten percent of all e-mail received is spam.

In the Impulse poll, Chicago-area businesses reported 32 percent of disruptions affected one business unit, and another 19 percent indicated that multiple business units were impacted.
