The survey ranked 10 cities on their spontaneity and L.A. came in a less-than-spontaneous eighth, ahead of Detroit and Washington, D.C. but far behind Boston, Chicago and Philadelphia (Nos. 3,4 and 5). A marketing firm asked 1,000 respondents whether they made impulse purchases, threw impromptu parties, acted before they thought and, of course, took instant photos, among other measures. L.A. did dismally overall, but scored second best on one dubious distinction: whether or not they have ever impulsively im·pul·sive adj. 1. Inclined to act on impulse rather than thought. 2.
