Quest Software introduces EnterPrint for production printing on open networks; links HP 3000s, HP 9000s with high-end Xerox laser printers.TORONTO, Ontario--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Aug. 15, 1995--Quest Software Inc., based in Newport Beach, Calif., Tuesday introduced EnterPrint(tm), its enterprise-wide printer server solution for customers who need production printing (50-135 ppm) capabilities on their commercial client/server networks. Quest Software is in attendance at the Interex '95 Conference & Expo. Quest Software developed EnterPrint in cooperation with Xerox Inc. and Hewlett-Packard Co. - the market leaders in production printing and UNIX systems, respectively. EnterPrint connects HP9000 commercial UNIX-based servers and HP 3000 systems to Xerox production laser printing systems for distributing and printing large volumes of "mission critical" external documents - e.g., customer invoices, financial statements and mass mailings. Quest Software has targeted EnterPrint at companies in the banking, financial services, insurance and telecommunications industries currently "rightsizing Selecting a computer system, whether micro, mini or mainframe, that best meets the needs of the application. " or "downsizing (1) Converting mainframe and mini-based systems to client/server LANs. (2) To reduce equipment and associated costs by switching to a less-expensive system. The minicomputer industry was launched in 1959 after Digital Equipment Corporation introduced its PDP-1 for $120,000, an unheard-of low price for a computer in , workstation and LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used. application servers; provides an ideal solution for downsizing environments, site consolidation and departmental integration. "EnterPrint emerged from the needs of Xerox printer and HP server users for efficient output management when printing information for their customers," said Carlos Caballero, Quest Software director of marketing. In the fall of 1994, as part of efforts at offloading Xerox print services from mainframe computers, Xerox and HP signed an agreement to bring production printing to enterprise-wide open networks in which the mission-critical nature of production printing makes it imperative that the new open networks deployed have access to high-end printing facilities. Enter EnterPrint. "Downsizing works for the computer and the network, but printing doesn't downsize; it upsizes! Users suddenly get access to value-added printer features like highlight color, forms and higher speeds," explained Quest's Caballero. "So, while you're downsizing your computer installation, EnterPrint lets you upsize up·size v. up·size, up·siz·ing, up·siz·es v.intr. To become greater or larger: "the chief executives ... saw the combined value of their share options upsize by $36. your printing operation across the boundaries of your network." Said Andy Sachs, Xerox director, strategic alliances - "EnterPrint enables Xerox and HP to deliver the industry's most powerful solution for production printing in commercial UNIX environments. Now customers have the choice and flexibility to manage high-volume printing from UNIX networks, or continue with the host mainframe structure. For Xerox, we retain our leadership printing position already secured in mainframe environments while enhancing our access to the rapidly growing Open Systems market." Introductory prices for EnterPrint start at $11,000. Quest Software, Newport Beach, was founded in 1985. The company is a leading vendor of system software products for the HP MPE MPE abbr.
