Queers and education.The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies The Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) was founded in 1991 by Professor Martin Duberman as the first university-based research center in the United States dedicated to the study of historical, cultural, and political issues of vital concern to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and (CLAGS CLAGS Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CUNY) ) is committed to fostering and disseminating LGBTQ LGBTQ Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer/Questioning research and scholarship both in the United States and abroad. CLAGS is online (www.clags.org) and their site includes CLAG's Online Directory of LGBTQ Studies, a searchable collection of scholars within universities and non-governmental organizations, and fields of LGBTQ Studies available nationwide. The United States Student Association The United States Student Association (USSA), founded in 1947, bills itself as the oldest and largest student association in the United States. It has a historical and current commitment to diversity and breaking the barriers to educational access imposed by inequality and and college students across the country called their legislators on April 14, 2004 to garner support for a bill that would make immigration easier for the same-sex partners of U. S. citizens. The Permanent Partners Immigration Act would allow U. S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who are in permanent same-sex partnerships to sponsor their partners for immigration purposes (The Advocate, May 14, 2004). Shannon Minter, transgender attorney, activist and scholar, and currently Legal Director of the National Center for Lesbian Rights The National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) is a non-profit, public interest law firm that litigates precedent-setting cases at the trial and appellate court levels, advocates for equitable public policies affecting the LGBT community, provides free legal assistance to LGBT in San Francisco, received an Honorary Degree from the City University of New York School of Law The City University of New York School of Law is a law school operated by the City University of New York (CUNY). Although adjacent to Queens College in Flushing, Queens, New York, it is administratively separate. on May 21, 2004. Minter is the first transgender legal activist to be awarded an honorary degree from any law school. Hiring a professor for the prestigious Rattigan Professorship at Boston College ended in failure, amid charges that Father William Leahy, BC's president, rejected the leading candidates because they are gay. Leahy, a vocal opponent of gay marriage who granted official recognition for a gay-straight student alliance only last year, denied the charges (Boston Globe, April 8, 2004). The American Civil Liberties Union American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), nonpartisan organization devoted to the preservation and extension of the basic rights set forth in the U.S. Constitution. came to the defense of a group of Utah high school students who were punished for wearing "Queers Kick Ash" t-shirts to school. Although the shirts were a part of a campaign to discourage LGBTQ youth from smoking, the school threatened to ban the school's gay-straight alliance. The ACLU of Utah demanded that officials remove any suspensions from student's records, allow the students to wear the shirts without fear of punishment, and drop the threats against the gay-straight alliance.
