Quebec promises $550 million to families with children.


MONTREAL Montreal (mŏn'trēôl`), Fr. Montréal (môNrāäl`), city (1991 pop. 1,017,666), S Que., Canada, on Montreal island, surrounded by St. Lawrence River and Rivière des Prairies.  -- The Quebec government will provide a $550 million payment to families in the form of quarterly cheques to parents of children under 18. At the same time it will balance its budget.

A couple with two children, under 18 for example, will receive a quarterly cheque of up to $750. "It's probably the first time in Canada Canada is divided into six time zones and ranks third among countries with respect to number of time zones, after Russia (eleven) and the United States (nine).

Among the social benefits in the budget: elimination of the provincial sales tax sales tax, levy on the sale of goods or services, generally calculated as a percentage of the selling price, and sometimes called a purchase tax. It is usually collected in the form of an extra charge by the retailer, who remits the tax to the government.  on diapers, baby bottles and items used for breast-feeding breast-feeding /breast-feedĀ·ing/ (brestĀ“fed?ing) nursing; the feeding of an infant at the mother's breast. .

The budget will also boost health-care spending by 5.1 per cent, or $1 billion over last year. Education funding was increased by 2.7 per cent, or $309 million.

To balance its budget, the provincial government is eliminating a $240-million work premium for low-income workers and $220 million in tax cuts through the simplification of the province's tax system.
