Quebec archbishop now a cardinal.

He was the first non-Italian pope elected since the Dutch Adrian VI (1522–23) and the first Polish and Slavic pope.  on October 21 was Quebec Archbishop Marc Ouellet His Eminence Marc Cardinal Ouellet, PSS (born 8 June 1944 in Lamotte, Quebec, Canada) is a Canadian prelate of the Roman Catholic Church. He is the present Archbishop of Quebec, and thus Primate of Canada. He was elevated to a cardinal on 21 October 2003. , the Primate of Canada. Archbishop Ouellet's elevation came very shortly after his accession to the Archdiocese of Quebec (See News in Brief, Nov 2003, p. 27).

At age 59, he is one of the youngest cardinals. American Vatican observer and author John Allen has speculated that, even if Cardinal Ouellet is not in the first rank of "papabile Papabile (pl. Papabili) is an unofficial Italian term first coined by Vaticanologists and now used internationally in many languages to describe a cardinal of whom it is thought likely or possible that he will be elected pope. ", he has the capability to be "a very important player".

Cardinal Ouellet's elevation raises the number of living Canadian cardinals to 5. The others are Cardinals Ambrozic (Toronto) and Turcotte (Montreal), and the two retired cardinals, Edouard Gagnon and Louis-Albert Vachon.
