Quantum Desktop Drives Used in Monorail's New Sub-$1,000 PC.


MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 5, 1996--Quantum Corp. (NMS See NetWare Management System. : QNTM) today announced that Monorail monorail, railway system that uses cars that run on a single rail. Typically the rail is run overhead and the cars are either suspended from it or run above it.  Inc. will use the Quantum Fireball fireball, very bright meteor leaving a trail in the sky that can remain visible for several minutes; often a distinct sound, perhaps caused by very low frequency radio waves, is associated with it.  TM and Quantum Pioneer SG hard disk drives as the primary storage devices for its new Monorail PC desktop computer.

Priced under $1,000, the Monorail PC is a full-featured computer with a unique space-saving design. It is designed to bring affordable computing within reach of the estimated 23 million U.S. households who have yet to purchase a PC.

In addition to the Quantum 1 gigabyte (GB) 3.5-inch hard disk drive, the Monorail PC features a 75 MHz (MegaHertZ) One million cycles per second. It is used to measure the transmission speed of electronic devices, including channels, buses and the computer's internal clock. A one-megahertz clock (1 MHz) means some number of bits (16, 32, 64, etc.  processor (upgradeable to a 133 MHz or 200 MHz Intel Pentium processor), 16 megabytes (MB) of RAM, a 33.6 Kbps modem, 16-bit Sound Blaster A very popular family of sound cards from Creative Labs. In the days of DOS, Sound Blaster was the de facto interface for gaming sounds. Monaural Sound Blaster cards were introduced in 1989, and stereo cards followed in 1992 (Sound Blaster Pro). Both drives feature a unique mechanical platform that contributes to the products' economical design. For high performance and capacity, the drives feature a PRML (Partial Response Maximum Likelihood) A technique used to differentiate a valid signal from noise by measuring the rate of change at various intervals of the rising waveform.  read channel, a Fast ATA-2 interface and 4,500 RPM speed.

Quantum's desktop storage products are targeted at three distinct segments of the market -- entry-level/commercial, consumer/commercial, and performance commercial/expert PC. The Quantum Fireball TM and Quantum Pioneer SG products are aimed at the entry-level/commercial segment, and are ideal storage devices for entry-level desktop computer systems like the Monorail PC.
