IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 1, 2000

ATL (Active Template Library) A set of software routines from Microsoft that provide the basic framework for creating ActiveX and COM objects. Stemming from the standard template library (STL) that comes with C++ compilers, ATL includes an object wizard that sets up , an element of Quantum's DLT (Digital Linear Tape) A magnetic tape technology originally developed by Digital for its VAX line. The technology was later sold to Quantum, which makes it available to other manufacturers. DLT uses half-inch, single-hub cartridges similar to IBM's 3480/3490/3590 line.  and Storage Systems Group (NYSE NYSE

drive in its L200 PowerStor(TM) DLTtape library.

The new drive provides 40 gigabytes of native capacity and five megabytes-per-second of native throughput while maintaining complete backward compatibility See backward compatible.

(jargon) backward compatibility - Able to share data or commands with older versions of itself, or sometimes other older systems, particularly systems it intends to supplant.
with the DLT4000 and DLT7000 drives.

With the DLT8000 drive, PowerStor L200 now has a native capacity of 320 gigabytes, or, with the compression mode selected, approximately 640 gigabytes of storage.

Features and benefits of the DLT8000 include:

-- Integrated Solution: Enhanced performance system-wide, high
reliability from verified components, and reduced
       implementation costs.

-- Superior Uptime: Excellent performance for backup and retrieval,
data warehousing, e-commerce and image archiving; reliable data
management at high speeds; and cost-effective solution for high
       throughput requirements.

-- DLTtape System: Fast solution in a widely accepted technology,
low maintenance from rugged design and proven reliability, and
       inexpensive to own and operate.

-- WebAdmin(TM) Software: Provided free with every ATL library,
WebAdmin provides quick and easy access to library status via
the Web, with early detection and notification of operational
       problems to help prevent failures.

"As companies experience exponential growth Extremely fast growth. On a chart, the line curves up rather than being straight. Contrast with linear.  in their data storage requirements, the increased capacity and throughput of the DLT8000 eases the burden of protecting data in mid-market applications," said Neal Waddington, chief operating officer Chief Operating Officer (COO)

of ATL. "This is especially true when smaller or non-existent IS departments are being strained by the burden and inconsistency of manual backups."

ATL's PowerStor libraries provide cost-effective automated backup and restore of data in departments and workgroups, delivering superior DLTtape reliability and performance in a flexible and easy-to-use library system ideal for protecting data in small to mid-size LANs.

The L200 library supports eight cartridges, an optional barcode reader and one of the following DLTtape drives: DLT4000 single-ended SCSI or differential SCSI, DLT7000 single-ended or differential, and DLT8000 HVD. PowerStor libraries are plug-and-play, delivered completely assembled and tested, and sold through VARs and resellers.

The DLT8000-based PowerStor L200 will be available for shipment beginning June 1, 2000.
