Qualcomm releases BREWChat.New technology can pop up in unexpected places. The two companies have signed a preliminary agreement to implement BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) An application development environment from Qualcomm for enhanced cellphone services (e-mail, games, etc.). BREW is directly supported in the CDMA chipsets from Qualcomm, and BREW-enabled applications work no matter on Delta's network by June 2004. BREWChat is based on Qualcomm QChat technology for CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. and shares all the same features, but it's designed for CDMA2000 1x networks. BREWChat uses standard VoIP and runs on Qualcomm's BREW platform, which provides over-the-air software updates and the ability to set up PTT chat groups. Don't expect BREWChat to be deployed on U.S. mobile carrier networks any time soon.
