Qualcomm releases BREWChat.


New technology can pop up in unexpected places. Qualcomm's push-to-talk (PTT (1) (Postal, Telegraph & Telephone) The governmental agency responsible for combined postal, telegraph and telephone services in many European countries.

) solution, BREWChat, is available and will likely appear on Delta Telecom, a cellular carrier in northwest Russia. The two companies have signed a preliminary agreement to implement BREW (Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless) An application development environment from Qualcomm for enhanced cellphone services (e-mail, games, etc.). BREW is directly supported in the CDMA chipsets from Qualcomm, and BREW-enabled applications work no matter  on Delta's network by June 2004.

BREWChat is based on Qualcomm QChat technology for CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band.  and shares all the same features, but it's designed for CDMA2000 1x networks. BREWChat uses standard VoIP and runs on Qualcomm's BREW platform, which provides over-the-air software updates and the ability to set up PTT chat groups.

Don't expect BREWChat to be deployed on U.S. mobile carrier networks any time soon. Qualcomm is locked out of the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area.  until 2006 because of a non-compete agreement with Nextel.
