On June 26th, 2000, Quadtel NL (ASX.:QTL.AZ), a leading provider of broadband solutions throughout the Asia-Pacific and Australia, announced its first major broadband initiative here with SingTel, Alcatel and Fujitsu. The month long promotion, which begins in July, will see Fujitsu notebooks being bundled with Alcatel's Speed Touch USB ADSL modem's for an additional S$1.

Customers will also have three months of free SingTel Magix Supersurf ADSL access when they sign up for a 12-month subscription program.

"What we are offering is a chance for Singaporeans to enjoy ADSL connectivity for practically nothing!" said David Ramsay, Quadtel's Chief Executive Officer.

Quadtel, which established its Asia Pacific office here in February this year, is targeting the lucrative and rapidly expanding regional broadband market. According to a forecast issued in February by industry consultants the Yankee Group, the Asia-Pacific, Australia and New Zealand region will by 2003, have more than 11 million broadband service subscribers, generating annual revenues of at least US$5 billion.

"This is the first step in Quadtel's strategy of providing superior products and services that enables both consumers, telcos and ISPs to participate in the broadband market," Ramsay said.

"Quadtel has a contract with Alcatel - the world leader in ADSL technology - to supply their SpeedTouch range of ADSL modems to ISPs and telcos throughout Australia and the Asia Pacific region, so to start out in Singapore with such an attractive solution with a major local player embracing our technology is a significant step."

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line or ADSL is a technology for transmitting digital information at speeds of up to 8000Kbps. Unlike a traditional dial-up connection, ADSL provides "always on" access. Users can also use have both telephone and network access at the same time.

"We believe that ADSL and broadband connectivity in general is the future, and agreements like this one will help remove the traditionally prohibitive entry level cost for high speed access," Ramsay added.

Running through the month, the promotion will kick off at the Funan IT Mall on Wednesday, 5 July 2000. Along with demonstrations of SingTel Magix's services, customers can get additional details on the bundle through a selected network of Fujitsu's 12 computer dealers island-wide.

Singapore, which has an extensive fibre-optic network, was according to Ramsay, Quadtel's logical choice for the deployment of such a solution.

"The whole program is definitely in line with the government's plans to increase the use of technology in the daily activities of the man in the street. These programs will quickly expand the installed base of broadband service users allowing people to quickly and easily access more information and higher quality content than previously possible," Ramsay said.

The partnership with SingTel Magix is also a natural one as the company found Quadtel's approach and objectives similar to its own.

SingTel Magix currently provides access to SingaporeONE, the world's first nationwide broadband network that delivers interactive multimedia applications and services to the island state.
