The report said that the country's ecological footprint totalled 11.64 global hectares per person (gha), which is the amount of biologically productive land and water area required to produce the resources its population consumes, and absorb the waste it generates.

The UAE, which topped the list for several years, has now moved to the third position with 8.4 gha. However, the report pointed out that the country is still straining global resources as it only has 0.6gha of biocapacity available.

Kuwait came second on the list with an ecological footprint of 9.68 gha.

Globally, ecological footprint has doubled since 1966, said the report.

"We are living as if we have an extra planet at our disposal," said Jim Leape, WWF International director general.
