WEST CHESTER, Pa., July 29 /PRNewswire/ -- QVC (NASDAQ: QVCN) today announced the appointment of Candice M. Carpenter, the former head of Time-Life Television and Video, as president of Q2, a new televised shopping/programming service.
As president of Q2, Carpenter will be responsible for the overall development of the new service, as well as for its day-to-day operations.
Q2 will bring a strong editorial point of view to its programming, putting an emphasis on ways to get the things you want and need more easily. The service is being designed to reach a contemporary audience that hasn't yet become involved with traditional home shopping because they feel it doesn't meet their needs. Q2 will speak to those people who may not have much time but still want great diversity of products, styles and good values.
Q2 is scheduled to be launched in the spring of 1994 and will be located in New York and Los Angeles. It will be making additional personnel and other announcements during the next few months, with a full formal announcement of the service expected this fall.
Programming will try to provide creative solutions to everyday problems: how to look great without living in a gym, finding the computer that's meant for you, the things you need to pull together the ultimate dinner party, buying and using a mountain bike, turning your bathtub into a spa, buying and cooking healthy foods, gardening -- even if you live in a city, cheap three-day getaways, traveler's aid -- products for life on the road, bike trips across Europe, great coffees and teas of the world, cards and stationery for the lost art of letter writing, throwing a successful birthday party for a 5-year-old, baby- proofing made easy, toys for terrors, hosting the perfect baby shower.
Shopping for your girlfriend, gifts grandkids will love, children's book corner, camping for beginners, great presents shipped anywhere fast, car care for women, housewares from the Italian countryside, creating a bachelor's kitchen, redecorating your apartment in a weekend, one perfect pair of sunglasses, actually comfortable clothes for downtime, 50 ways to work a little black dress, classic French belts and bags, sweatwear for showoffs, clothes for men who hate to shop, music that's off the beaten track, videos worth owning and great trash reading for the beach.
"Q2 is a blank piece of paper with no built-in biases," said Barry Diller, chairman and CEO of QVC. "In its brightness and exuberance it will endeavor to capture the imagination of every consumer's heart. I believe Candice Carpenter has the combination of creative and business skills to lead the development of this project, and all of us at QVC look forward to working with her."
"I am very excited about the chance to launch a new era integrating entertainment and shopping," Carpenter said. "Q2 will be a combination of a great specialty store and a great lifestyle magazine. For people who dive into life and want the best it can offer, Q2 will be indispensable."
Carpenter had been with Time-Warner since 1989, where she was president, Time-Life Television and Video. During her tenure there, she built Time-Life Video from start-up to market leader by creating successful consumer franchises in documentary, kids, feature films, nature and lifestyle genres, while acquiring several of the biggest video hits in history. She also created Time-Life Television, which developed programming for network, cable and syndication.
Prior to Time-Life, Carpenter spent six years as vice president, Consumer Marketing for American Express, Travel Related Services, where she developed the brands "Sign and Travel" and "Card Member Financial Services" and repositioned various high-end membership programs for the company. She is a graduate of Stanford University and holds an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.
QVC, the nation's largest cable shopping channel, is transmitted live, 24 hours a day, seven day a week. It currently reaches more than 44 million homes via cable, and 3 million homes with satellite dishes from coast to coast.
