Those are the types of brain teasers eight local students will face Friday as they compete for top honors in the state finals of the National Geographic Bee The National Geographic Bee (previously called the National Geography Bee) is an annual geography contest sponsored by the National Geographic Society. The Bee, held every year since 1989, is open to students in the fourth through eighth grade in participating American  - a series of queries on the world's geography, economies, politics, cultures and religions.

The state winner gets an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., with a teacher for the May 21-22 finals, which will be moderated by ``Jeopardy!'' quiz show host Alex Trebek.

First prize in the national competition includes a $25,000 college scholarship and a lifetime subscription to National Geographic magazine The National Geographic Magazine, later shortened to National Geographic, is the official journal of the National Geographic Society. It published its first issue in 1888, just nine months after the Society itself was founded. . Second- and third-place winners receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively.

Not bad for the nationally televised competition that annually attracts some 5 million students in grades four through eight.

The state competition - which will not be televised - will take place at Cosumnes River College The college is part of the Los Rios Community College District and was opened in 1970. Current enrollment is 16,000 students at its main campus. Folsom Lake College, a former satellite, attained independence in 2004.

--Edan T. Ben-Moshe, Kadima Hebrew Academy, Woodland Hills

--Greg D. Lee, Hale Middle School, Woodland Hills
