QUITE A GRAY DAY FOR THE OFFICIAL START OF SUMMER.

Byline: Dana Bartholomew Staff Writer

Summer's official arrival Monday was marked by June gloom - cool temperatures and overcast skies on the longest day of the year.

``It's kind of an irony for the first day of summer being overcast all day,'' said Dessa Garton, surface program manager for the National Weather Service in Oxnard.

``June gloom.''

Tourists expecting clear, postcard skies may have to wait for days.

Residents along the coast and inland valleys this week can expect low morning fog with a chance of afternoon clearing, forecasters said.

Temperatures are expected to stay cool, from the 70s at the beaches and in downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  and up to the low 80s in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Forecasters predicted slightly hotter weather in the Santa Clarita Santa Clarita, city (1990 pop. 110,642), Los Angeles co., S Calif., suburb 30 mi (48 km) NW of downtown Los Angeles, on the Santa Clara River; inc. 1987. Situated in the Santa Clara valley and nearby canyons, Santa Clarita includes the former towns of Canyon Country,  and Antelope valleys. In the desert, highs in the mid-90s with afternoon winds between 15 and 25 mph are expected.

Monday was the official world solstice. But for the West Coast residents, summer arrived this year at 5:56 p.m. Sunday.

Summer occurs north of the equator when the Earth tilts at 23.5 degrees toward the sun, bringing higher solar energy solar energy, any form of energy radiated by the sun, including light, radio waves, and X rays, although the term usually refers to the visible light of the sun. . Garton said June gloom is caused by cold ocean currents reacting with a warm low-pressure system off the coast, causing a foggy marine layer.

``It is gloomy,'' she said. The fog ``didn't burn off much at all ... This is actually nice weather to do gardening.''
