QUILTED NORTHERN SURVEY ANSWERS AGE-OLD QUESTION; THREE OF FOUR AMERICANS PREFER TOILET PAPER OVER, NOT UNDER

 NORWALK, Conn., May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A first-of-its-kind survey has settled, once and for all, the great toilet paper debate. The Quilted Northern bathroom tissue survey found that nearly three-quarters (73 percent) of those surveyed prefer their toilet paper "over the top," rather than coming from under the roll. The "over or under" question has been a topic of dispute for decades on talk shows and in newspaper advice columns.
 The survey of 1,200 Americans was commissioned by Northern to develop new Quilted Northern bathroom tissue. Among the survey findings:
 -- The average person uses 90 sheets of toilet paper each day. That works out to about 75 rolls per person per year.
 -- The most important bathroom tissue features are "softness" (66 percent), "strength" (63 percent), "two-ply" (57 percent) and "fluffy" (51 percent).
 -- Slightly more (42 percent) tear their toilet paper right-to-left than left-to-right (35 percent). More than half of those surveyed said they tear their toilet paper with one hand.
 -- Everyone has his or own style. While "crumpling" is the most popular (40 percent) method of applying the toilet paper, "wrapping" and "folding" aren't far behind at 30 percent each.
 The survey also looked at alternate uses and substitutes for toilet paper.
 -- The top alternate use for toilet paper was "removing makeup" (22 percent), followed by "cleaning eyeglasses" (17 percent), and "wiping around the sink" (16 percent).
 -- When out of toilet paper, the most popular substitute is "facial tissue" followed by "pre-moistened wipes," with a "wet washcloth" bringing up the rear.
 It was consumer demand for comfort that led researchers to develop new Quilted Northern. According to Quilted Northern Brand Manager Anthony J. Morakis, "We've always known that softness is the primary motivator in choosing a particular brand of bathroom tissue. But the research showed that absorbency and strength also were key factors. Our new quilted product combines all three benefits in one package to deliver the truly ultimate bathroom tissue."
 New Quilted Northern, manufactured by James River Corp., is available in grocery, discount, drug, convenience and club stores, and at mass merchandisers nationwide.
