QUIET ADVANTAGES COME WITH TAHOE'S OFF-SEASON.Byline: Stan Wawer San Gabriel Valley The San Gabriel Valley is one of the principal valleys of southern California. It lies to the east of the city of Los Angeles, to the north of the Puente Hills, to the south of the San Gabriel Mountains, and to the west of the Inland Empire. Tribune Lake Tahoe is swarming with vacationers in the summer, and overrun with skiers in the winter. It has little or no spring, depending on the snowfall. Last winter, El Nino dumped a ton of snow on the area, allowing euphoric skiers and snowboarders to do their thing well into May. Fall in Lake Tahoe, however, offers all the summertime activities without the crowds. Only about 500 miles away, Lake Tahoe is flat-out gorgeous. The fourth annual Oktoberfest takes place Oct. 3-4. The festival includes craft booths, jugglers, a pumpkin patch, hay rides, face painting, contests and the traditional Oktoberfest Beer Garden. I was winded by the time we reached 8,500 feet, but our Swedish guide, Roger Bostron from Stockholm, reassured me that I wasn't the only person breathing heavily. Guided hikes are offered at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. daily through mid-October. The gondola ride up is $12 for adults and well worth the trip. Lake Tahoe encompasses nearly 300 miles of trails winding past scenery that rivals any of the national parks. A wilderness permit is required. Golf has become a big sport in Lake Tahoe. Five courses on the South Shore and others within a half-hour drive allow ample opportunity to sample this burgeoning golf venue. The Dixie II, one of two paddlewheelers on the lake (the other is the Tahoe Queen), leaves from Zephyr Zephyr or Zephyrus: see Eos. Cove Marina, for several fun cruises daily. The champagne brunch cruise continues through November, the historic Glenbrook Bay breakfast tour runs through October and the Emerald Bay sightseeing cruise and the sunset dinner dance cruise go year round.
