QUESTIONNAIRE GIVES WOMEN INSIGHT INTO HEART DISEASE.

The Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Department of Public Health began offering a free questionnaire Wednesday for women who want to assess their risk for heart disease.

"The most serious health threat facing women are chronic diseases including heart disease and diabetes," said Department of Public Health Director Dr. Jonathan E. Fielding.

"Chronic diseases account for 86 percent of the total disease burden for women in Los Angeles County and many of these conditions can be prevented with lifestyle changes.

"Just by adding 30 minutes of moderate-level physical activity on most days of the week and cutting down calories in one's diet can make a difference."

 will receive information including how to prevent heart disease and where to find free and low-cost health and fitness programs in the county.Risk factors include smoking, physical inactivity physical inactivity A sedentary state. Obesity has been defined as a weight more than 20% above what is considered normal according to standard age, height, and weight tables, or by a complex formula known as the body mass index. , diabetes and hypertension hypertension or high blood pressure, elevated blood pressure resulting from an increase in the amount of blood pumped by the heart or from increased resistance to the flow of blood through the small arterial blood vessels (arterioles). .
