QUARTZ HILL STARTING OVER REBELS LARGELY INEXPERIENCED AFTER MANY DO NOT RETURN.

Byline: Matthew Kredell Staff Writer

Quartz quartz, one of the commonest of all rock-forming minerals and one of the most important constituents of the earth's crust. Chemically, it is silicon dioxide, SiO2.  Hill expected to have a veteran track group in 2000. The Rebels didn't graduate a lot of runners, yet many are not returning to track this season.

After the boys struggled to a fourth-place finish in the Golden League last season, many decided not to come out for a new year. This leaves the Rebels in a rebuilding mode.

``Somehow, we graduated a small amount, but a lot of returning runners didn't show up,'' Quartz Hill co-coach Mike Davis said. ``So once again we're a young team.''

Especially hurt were the sprints, where coaches need to assemble an almost entirely new lineup A criminal investigation technique in which the police arrange a number of individuals in a row before a witness to a crime and ask the witness to identify which, if any, of the individuals committed the crime. . Quartz Hill is not hurting for choices, just experience. The Rebels did have 142 athletes, both boys and girls boys and girls

 why this happened.''

Distance is expected to be the team's strength in both girls' and boys' track. Most distance runners returned in what Davis calls an ``up-and- coming'' group.

``They've all worked really hard and improved over the last year greatly,'' Davis said. ``But we have no standouts.''

It's no surprise that two distance runners are the boys' team captains: Barber A barber (from the Latin barba, "beard") is someone whose occupation is to cut any type of hair, give shaves, and trim beards. ``I believe we have some young runners with a lot of potential. ...,'' Barber said. ``I think (freshman) Johnny Nguyen will turn some heads in the 800 and mile.''

The girls, who finished second in the Golden League last season, lost out to Highland by six inches in the final jump of the final meet of the regular season.

and sophomore Christin Shibley return. Freshmen Stevie Hennen and Candice Hansard also were impressive during the cross country season.

The girls also return two of its top short-distance runners. Sprinter Alexis Crimes is back for her junior year. Senior Jillian Jones, one of the top tennis players in the Golden League, also runs hurdles.

It's doubtful the Rebels will have anyone advance deep in the postseason this year, but such promising youth bodes well for the future, if they stay on the team.

``We're really trying to focus on being a positive and upbeat team,'' Davis said, ``because we're young and we're going to get whipped in some varsity meets.''
