QUARTZ HILL COMES BACK : QUARTZ HILL 3, VALENCIA 2.

Byline: Chris Cocoles Daily News Staff Writer

Jodie Cox had something to prove. So, too, did Julie Gold. Both redeemed themselves at the most critical time for Quartz Hill High's girls' soccer team.

Cox's 40-yard free kick goal tied Wednesday's Division I wild-card playoff play·off also play-off

Cox, a junior defender, had slipped guarding Valencia's Heather Zubis, leading to a successful penalty kick that had Quartz Hill (16-4-2) behind 2-1 with 17 minutes remaining.

``I was not on my game defensively at all,'' said Cox, who had assisted on Quartz Hill's first goal. ``I had to calm down and help my team win.''

When she was chosen to take the kick, Cox listened to advice from Gold and floated the ball toward the right corner of the net rather than look for a teammate to pass to.

``I just told her `Go for (the net). That's all you baby,' '' Gold said.

On an indirect free kick, which Valencia (17-9-1) coach Dudley Hitchman thought was the ruling, if the ball is not touched during the kick it's considered out of play.

Rebels coach Maury Cauchon was under the impression that it was a direct free kick, but it didn't matter when Valencia goalkeeper Kori Volkmann leaped, got a hand on the ball and saw it slip through the top right corner.

``It was a beautiful kick. (Volkmann) touched it and it went inside,'' Hitchman said. ``You can't fault her for touching it. It was a playoff game Noun 1. playoff game - one game in the series of games constituting a playoff

between two good teams. They deserved to win.''

Quartz Hill's third win of the season over the No. 9 Vikings wasn't secure until Gold took a nice feed in the box from freshman Andrea Cabriales and beat Volkmann in the 75th minute.

``I didn't even do anything to deserve a yellow card,'' Gold said. ``When coach sent me back out there he had faith in me to get the job done. I knew that (shot) was going to be mine.''
