 QUANEX ANNOUNCES MANAGEMENT CHANGES
 HOUSTON, Sept. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Quanex Corporation (NYSE: NX)


announced today that Carl E. Pfeiffer, its chairman of the board and chief executive officer, has advised the board that he intends to retire at the beginning of the company's next fiscal year, Nov. 1, 1992.
 "I have had 38 rewarding years of service with the company, including more than 20 years as CEO. During that time the company has grown and prospered, joining the Fortune '500' last year. I am pleased to continue my involvement with Quanex, but in a less active role," said Pfeiffer.
 Robert C. Snyder, Quanex's president and chief operating officer, will become chief executive officer. Pfeiffer will remain as the chairman of the board of directors of the company.
 Snyder stated, "I appreciate the confidence placed in me by the board and look forward to accepting my new responsibilities. Quanex is an exciting company, well-positioned both financially and operationally for the future."
 Background: Carl E. Pfeiffer
 Pfeiffer, 62, is a native of Detroit, Mich. and a graduate of Michigan State University with a B.S. degree in mechanical engineering.
 Pfeiffer joined Quanex Corporation, then the Michigan Seamless Tube Company, in 1953. He was elected president in 1971 and named chief executive officer and chairman of the executive committee by the board of directors in 1972. Pfeiffer was named to the new position of chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Quanex in 1989.
 Prior to his election as president of Quanex, Pfeiffer served as executive vice president of Michigan Seamless Tube, and as vice president-general manager of Gulf States Tube Division in Rosenberg, Texas.
 Pfeiffer is a director of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and has served on the boards of several charitable organizations in Houston and Michigan.
 Background: Robert C. Snyder
 Robert C. Snyder was named president and chief operating officer of Quanex Corporation in 1989. He had been executive vice president since 1983.
 Snyder, 53, came to Quanex Corporation as president and CEO of Leland Tube Company when it was acquired by Quanex in 1979. Since that time, he served as general manager of Atlantic Tube, president of Viking Metallurgical and president of the Metals Group of Quanex.
 Earlier, Snyder was president of Bishop Tube and general manager of Colson Caster. His background includes an engineering degree from Pittsburgh Technical Institute and graduate study in tool design and business administration.
