QUALCOMM REPORTS 25 PERCENT REVENUE INCREASE FOR SECOND QUARTER, FISCAL 1992

QUALCOMM REPORTS 25 PERCENT REVENUE INCREASE
 FOR SECOND QUARTER, FISCAL 1992
SAN DIEGO, April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- QUALCOMM Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: QCOM) today reported revenues for the second quarter ended March 29, 1992, of $26.3 million, an increase of 25 percent over the same quarter last year. For the first six months of fiscal 1992, revenues were $51.4 million, an increase of 33 percent over the first half of fiscal 1991.
The growth in revenue is primarily because of an increase of nearly 105 percent in OmniTRACS(R) unit sales from 1,876 units in the second quarter of fiscal 1991, to 3,837 units in the second quarter of fiscal 1992. Since its introduction in late 1988, the company has shipped more than 26,000 OmniTRACS terminals.
Net loss for the second quarter of fiscal 1992 was $1.2 million, or $.06 per share, compared to a loss of $547,000, or $.04 per share, in the second quarter ended March 31, 1991. Net loss for the first six months of fiscal 1992 was $2.9 million, or $.15 per share, compared to a loss of $784,000, or $.05 per share, in the first half of fiscal 1991. For the quarter, OmniTRACS continued to be profitable. The increase in the loss is primarily because of lower Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) license and development fees received in the second quarter as compared to the same quarter in fiscal 1991.
According to QUALCOMM President and Chief Executive Officer Irwin Jacobs, good progress continues to be made in the cellular standards activities for CDMA. A new Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) subcommittee was formed with strong industry support to specifically address a Wideband Spread Spectrum Standard. QUALCOMM's CDMA Digital Cellular Common Air Interface (CAI) was accepted as a contribution to that subcommittee. In February, the company entered into a CDMA subscriber support agreement with Matsushita. Subsequent to the second quarter, the company signed a licensing agreement with Nokia Mobile Phones, the world's second-largest manufacturer of cellular telephones, and announced an agreement with American Personal Communications (APC) where the company will sell CDMA equipment to permit APC to further test Personal Communications Services (PCS) in the Washington/Baltimore area.
During the second quarter, 11 new OmniTRACS contracts were signed, including NAVAJO Shippers Inc. NAVAJO, a nationwide truckload and less- than-truckload (LTL) carrier that specializes in refrigerated, dry van and distribution operations, contracted to equip its entire fleet of more than 600 trucks with OmniTRACS. NAVAJO also plans to equip its vehicles with the SensorTRACS(TM) Vehicle Management System, a software product that monitors conditions that affect fuel economy, truck reliability and cargo security. The company also announced the first sale of its QUALCOMM Decision Support System (QDSS(TM)), a load optimizer software product, to KLLM Transport Services Inc. According to Jacobs, the development and introduction of these new software products continues to significantly improve productivity and efficiency for OmniTRACS users.
QUALCOMM develops, manufactures, markets, licenses and operates advanced communications systems and products based on digital wireless technology. OmniTRACS, a satellite-based, two-way mobile communications and tracking system, provides data transmission and position reporting service for transportation companies and other mobile users in North America and Europe. QUALCOMM is developing, manufacturing and licensing Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) technology for use in digital cellular telephone systems and products. The company also develops and markets a range of VLSI devices, is developing signal processing components for HDTV, develops and manufactures communications products for the government and has formed a joint venture to launch a system of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites for worldwide communications.
