MSM MSM - Micronetics Standard MUMPS 6200 and MSM6300 Integrated Circuit and System Software Solutions

Address 3G WCDMA/cdma2000 1x Modes in Combination with GSM/GPRS

QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq:QCOM QCOM Qualcomm, Inc. (stock symbol) ), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access) A method for transmitting simultaneous signals over a shared portion of the spectrum. The foremost application of CDMA is the digital cellular phone technology from QUALCOMM that operates in the 800 MHz band and 1.9 GHz PCS band. ) digital wireless technology, today announced the MSM6200(TM) and MSM6300(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) integrated circuit and system software solutions to support second-generation (2G) and third-generation (3G) standards. The MSM6200 solution supports the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) mode of WCDMA (Wideband CDMA) A 3G high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that use the TDMA or GSM technology worldwide, including AT&T (formerly Cingular) and T-Mobile in the U.S.  as well as Global System for Mobile Communications (communications) Global System for Mobile Communications - (GSM, originally "Groupe de travail Sp?ciale pour les services Mobiles") One of the major standards for digital cellular communications, in use in over 60 countries and serving over one billion subscribers.  (GSM) and General Packet Radio Services (GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) The first high-speed digital data service provided by cellular carriers that used the GSM technology. GPRS added a packet-switched channel to GSM, which uses dedicated, circuit-switched channels for voice conversations. ). The MSM6300 solution supports 3G cdma2000 1x and GSM/GPRS, enabling global roaming for carriers that have deployed cdma2000 systems or are currently providing 2G GSM/GPRS service.

"The integration of GSM and GPRS into the MSM6xxx family represents a natural evolution of our product line, building on QCT's extensive CDMA expertise to develop multimode solutions that address the emerging worldwide market," said Don Schrock, president of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "Our highly integrated radioOne and baseband architecture, coupled with complete software solutions for wireless modems, Internet protocols and features will allow handset manufacturers to quickly deliver cost-effective multimode products."

Like all members of the MSM6xxx family of integrated circuits, the MSM6200 and MSM6300 devices feature the QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (QCT) radioOne(TM) direct RF-to-baseband conversion technology, which eliminates the need for large IF Surface Acoustic Wave A surface acoustic wave (SAW) is an acoustic wave traveling along the surface of a material having some elasticity, with an amplitude that typically decays exponentially with the depth of the substrate.  (SAW) filters and additional IF circuitry. Eliminating these parts significantly reduces handset bill of materials The list of components that make up a system. For example, a bill of materials for a house would include the cement block, lumber, shingles, doors, windows, plumbing, electric, heating and so on.  (BOM), resulting in cost-effective multiband and multimode handsets that can be produced in smaller form factors.

The MSM6200 and MSM6300 solutions support QCT's Wireless Internet Launchpad(TM) suite of advanced multimedia, connectivity, position location, user interface and removable storage functionality, including Bluetooth(TM) connectivity capabilities, Qtunes(TM) Moving Picture Experts Group (compression, standard, algorithm, file format, body) Moving Picture Experts Group - (MPEG, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29 WG11) An ISO committee that generates standards for digital video compression and audio. Also the name of their algorithms.  (MPEG-1) Layer-3 (MP3) player software, and Compact Media Extension (CMX(TM)) Musical Instrument Digital Interface (music, hardware, protocol, file format) Musical Instrument Digital Interface - (MIDI /mi'-dee/, /mee'-dee/) A hardware specification and protocol used to communicate note and effect information between synthesisers, computers, music keyboards, controllers, and other electronic  (MIDI)-based multimedia software. These solutions provide support for the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless BREW is an application development platform created by Qualcomm for mobile phones. It was originally developed for CDMA handsets, but has since been ported to other air interfaces including GSM/GPRS, UMTS, and CDMA. (TM) (BREW(TM)) applications platform.

"The MSM6200 and MSM6300 solutions enable the design of highly integrated and optimized WCDMA and cdma2000 1x multimode handsets, maximizing standby and talk times and offering the advanced features provided by the Wireless Internet Launchpad suite of technologies," said Johan Lodenius, senior vice president of marketing and product management for QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies. "With the full support of the Wireless Internet Launchpad suite across multimodes, these solutions provide carriers with the opportunity to differentiate their 3G services and offer their subscribers a wide variety of state-of-the-art features and applications."

QCT's GSM/GPRS solutions support Phase 2+ of GSM and GPRS class 12 data services; the MSM6200 solution meets the FDD Release 99 mode, providing data rates of up to 384 kilobits per second (unit) kilobits per second - (kbps, kb/s) A unit of data rate where 1 kb/s = 1000 bits per second. This contrasts with units of storage where 1 Kb = 1024 bits (note upper case K).  (kbps); and the MSM6300 solution supports cdma2000, providing data speeds of up to 307 kbps.

The MSM6200 and MSM6300 interfaces directly to QCT's Mobile Station Processor (MSP(TM)) family of application processors for fast development of tightly integrated smart phone, automotive and other Internet appliances, providing support for a variety of applications, including streaming video using PacketVideo's PVPlayer(TM) MPEG-4 streaming media decoder.

Sample shipments of QCT's MSM6200 and MSM6300 solutions are expected in the first half of calendar 2002.
