Free Development Platform for MSM-Enabled Devices and Applications

QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), pioneer and world leader of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) digital wireless technology, today announced the introduction of the Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless(TM) (BREW(TM)) platform Application Programming Interface (API), denoted BREWapi, which will allow handset manufacturers and developers to more quickly and easily develop both embedded and downloadable components and BREW-based products. The new BREWapi will be incorporated initially in and delivered at no cost with the Qualcomm CDMA Technologies (QCT) MSM6050(TM) Mobile Station Modem (MSM(TM)) chipset and system software.

BREWapi consists of a set of interfaces that enables manufacturers and developers to create wireless applications, including browsers and user interfaces, by offering easy and consistent access to MSM chip-level functions such as graphics and bitmap display support, position location information through the MSM's gpsOne(TM) technology, and the ability to play a music file or display a still image or an animation file.

The MSM6050 chipset and system software is QCT's highly integrated next-generation CDMA2000 1X product, which will offer increased processing power in a mid-tier 3G solution that doubles system voice capacity over previous IS-95A/B solutions. The MSM6050 solution supports data rates of up to 153 kilobits per second (kbps), integrates QCT's radioOne(TM) Zero Intermediate Frequency (ZIF), or a direct conversion architecture, and supports QUALCOMM's gpsOne Assisted Global Positioning System (AGPS) technology.

Beginning with the MSM6050 solution, samples of which are expected to ship by the end of March 2002, the new BREWapi will be available on all subsequent members of the MSM family of chipsets and system software.
