QUALCOMM Announces Availability of OmniExpress Mobile Communications System and Signs First Major Contracts; Averitt Express and Hub Group to Equip Dispatch Centers with New CDMA Data Application.

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 30, 2000

QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM), the leader in mobile communications for the transportation industry, today announced the commercial release of its new OmniExpress(TM) mobile communications system and the signing of its first major contracts with Averitt Express and Hub Group, Inc., (Nasdaq: HUBG) through one of Hub Group's Quality Services subsidiaries. The OmniExpress system is a fleet management system that provides real-time, two-way communications and vehicle position reporting for improved mobile worker productivity and operations administration. Features include automatic vehicle tracking using integrated global positioning systems (GPS), two-way data communications, store-and-forward messaging, as well as data integration capabilities with routing and scheduling systems, and business-specific office applications.

Averitt Express, based in Cookeville, Tenn., is a worldwide provider of freight transportation and logistics solutions, and currently uses QUALCOMM OmniTRACS A fleet management system from QUALCOMM. Introduced in the late 1980s, it includes two-way mobile communications hardware, fleet management software and satellite tracking through its San Diego-based network management center.(R) mobile communications systems in its truckload and dedicated divisions. Averitt plans to add OmniExpress to its less-than-truckload (LTL) division for use in its pick-up and delivery operations. Using wireless data, OmniExpress will enable Averitt to realize operational productivity gains and further differentiate its services.

"QUALCOMM's OmniExpress system meets our critical fleet management needs. The ability to use real-time information will provide our customers with a valuable competitive advantage," said David Henry, director of systems design for Averitt Express.

A leader in transportation management since 1971, Hub Group of Lombard, Ill. provides comprehensive solutions for intermodal, truckload, LTL, international and related logistics services. Through its Quality Services subsidiaries, the transportation management leader will equip its South Kearny, New Jersey and Bensalem, Pennsylvania terminals and fleets with the OmniExpress system. OmniExpress will enable Hub to integrate its pickup and delivery systems and streamline its logistics operations.

"With OmniExpress, we believe that customer service will be substantially enhanced, and we will reduce operating costs at the same time," said Richard Rogan, executive vice president of Hub Group. "The system will more than pay for itself through improved operating efficiencies."

OmniExpress will offer a cost-effective wireless mobile communications solution by transmitting data over the Sprint PCS digital network, which currently serves the nation's major metropolitan areas and communities across the country. Sprint PCS will also offer optional access to its nationwide wireless voice service to OmniExpress customers who want a fully integrated voice and data solution.

Building on the success of its market-leading OmniTRACS satellite-based mobile communications system, QUALCOMM developed OmniExpress to help companies with LTL, private, and other fleets that operate in metropolitan areas increase productivity and managerial efficiency in a cost-effective manner.

"We are extremely pleased that prestigious carriers such as Averitt Express and Hub Group, through its Quality Services subsidiaries, have chosen QUALCOMM as their primary mobile communications provider," stated George Dunn, vice president and general manager for United States and Canadian operations for QUALCOMM Wireless Business Solutions. "This versatile fleet management solution will allow us to expand into new and different transportation market segments, and will bring immediate benefits to these carriers and their customers."

QUALCOMM has helped the transportation industry become more efficient since 1988 when the OmniTRACS System began to provide transportation companies with an innovative and effective way of managing logistics. Our fleet management solutions continue to set the standard by offering innovative products and services that meet the demands of a constantly changing marketplace. With the introduction of OmniExpress, a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA)-based digital wireless communications and tracking system, along with trailer tracking and other innovative technologies, QUALCOMM continues to expand into new mobile markets. With a Network Management Center that processes more than five million transactions each day and over 350,000 QUALCOMM mobile systems shipped to businesses in more than 37 countries on four continents, QUALCOMM continues to lead the industry in providing wireless data solutions.
