QUAL-MED PROPOSAL ACCEPTED FOR CONSIDERATION IN CHAMPUS OREGON/WASHINGTON BID

PUEBLO, Colo, May 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Qual-Med Inc. (NASDAQ: QLMD) received written notice this week that its initial proposal for providing managed health care services under the CHAMPUS Reform Initiative (CRI) in Washington and Oregon is being considered for contract award. This planned expansion of CRI covers more than 200,000 active duty and nonactive duty dependents and retirees, who have historically incurred health care costs of an estimated $100 million per year.
In a notification letter to Qual-Med, the U.S. Department of Defense's Office of Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services (OCHAMPUS) said that "a determination has been made to continue with our schedule on (the CHAMPUS Reform Initiative in Washington and Oregon). The evaluation of initial proposals has been completed and your firm has been determined to be in the competitive range for award consideration."
OCHAMPUS plans to engage in discussions with qualified competitors regarding their proposals for Washington and Oregon in early June.
Further, Qual-Med disclosed that it expects to receive written confirmation that the CHAMPUS Reform Initiative award date for California and Hawaii, which had been indefinitely delayed by DoD, will be finalized later this week. Qual-Med is one of four competitors for this multibillion dollar managed care contract. The company believes that the best and final offers will be accepted by OCHAMPUS in June with an award scheduled for August.
