QMS announces expansion into document imaging marketplace; QMS CrownImage products expand value of print systems, delivering broad, image-enabled document management services.

MOBILE, Ala.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 27, 1995--QMS, Inc., the network printer company, today significantly advanced the capabilities of enterprise-wide document utilization with the introduction of QMS (1) (Minolta-QMS, Inc., Mobile, AL) A manufacturer of laser printers founded in 1977 by Jim Busby. Initially involved with controllers for printing bar codes and labels, it entered the laser printer business in the mid-1980s and set numerous records.  CrownImage.

CrownImage is a fully-integrated suite of advanced Windows-based applications created to enable image-rich document acquisition, management and distribution in network Client/Server environments.

Based on widely-used open standards Specifications for hardware and software that are developed by a standards organization or a consortium involved in supporting a standard. Available to the public for developing compliant products, open standards imply "open systems;" that an existing component in a system can be replaced , CrownImage provides an extensible, scaleable architecture which can be easily adapted to specific requirements. The QMS CrownImage products represent a new level of integrated functionality for document imaging products. The system provides support for standard electronic printing, image/document capture, image processing image processing

for document imaging (display, print, intelligent recognition storage and retrieval), digital copying services, and document "publishing" to enterprise messaging and on-line services. Because the system utilizes standard, readily available scanners and laser printers, complete solutions can be assembled at a fraction of the cost of comparable systems available on the market today.

"This expansion of our traditional product focus is a logical one for QMS," said James Busby James Busby (7 February 1801 - 15 July 1871) was involved in the drafting of the Treaty of Waitangi and is widely regarded as the "father" of the Australian wine industry, as he took the first collection of vine stock from Spain and France to Australia. , QMS President and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization.  industry research firm International Data Corporation estimates, the market for document management software is expected to reach $4.5 billion by 1996.

"The market need for enterprise-wide document imaging systems is exploding as more and more organizations continue to transition from paper-based storage to the electronic storage of information which can then be printed on-demand," said Donald Parker, Executive Vice President Products and Technology at QMS.

"QMS recognizes a strong need for enhanced document services which complement our capability in document output. CrownImage extends QMS' traditional print services to deliver complete document services which go beyond printing to provide complete document management and utilization facilities."

Together with image-enabled laser printers such as QMS ImageServer-based products and other peripheral devices, the CrownImage suite of software applications form a complete, high-capacity, cost effective, digital imaging system with capabilities beyond those of existing, higher cost, proprietary systems.

A minimum configuration includes a QMS Crown ImageServer Print System, a Scanner, and a Windows NT (Windows New Technology) A 32-bit operating system from Microsoft for Intel x86 CPUs. NT is the core technology in Windows 2000 and Windows XP (see Windows). Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  server. This basic system provides printing, copying, and scanning functions. Specific user configurations may include specialized output devices or communications connections.

While the CrownImage software is designed to work with virtually any brand of laser printer, systems using QMS ImageServer printers will benefit significantly from better performance and additional capabilities through QMS host-based and printer resident imaging software.

The CrownImage application suite consists of several distinct application packages:

CrownImage Arranger

The QMS Image Arranger provides powerful document manipulation capabilities to make it easy to assemble and arrange complex documents from a variety of sources and file formats.

CrownImage Browser

Image Browser software gives users the ability to quickly identify images from any local or user-addressable network storage device. The Image Browser can create a variety of views of files, allowing them to be printed, mailed, moved or copied to other directory locations. This application is ideal for creating complex, image-based compound documents, books and Coursepaks that can be demand-printed or electronically archived for later use.

CrownImage Copier

QMS CrownImage Copier software allows users to output documents to any printer on the network, save them to network storage devices, or distribute them through an enterprise messaging system An enterprise messaging system (EMS) is a set of published Enterprise-wide standards that allows organizations to send semantically precise messages between computer systems. . The simple interface of this unique digital copier capability enables a full complement of digital copier features, such as digital reduction and enlargement, watermarks, and image cropping.

QMS Image Ready Print Systems

QMS manufactures a complete range of print systems for use in document enabled enterprises. QMS ImageServer print systems provide high speed image printing with print speeds ranging from 10 to 45 pages per minute. QMS continues to lead the industry in providing the broadest selection of print systems, offering the performance and client/server network (1) A communications network that uses dedicated servers. In this context, the term is used to contrast it with a peer-to-peer network, which allows any client to also be a server.

Pricing and Availability

Windows NT and Windows '95 versions of CrownImage are available today. QMS also plans to offer versions of the software and network support for Macintosh and UNIX based Refers to a Unix operating system. The operating system may comply with the UNIX specifications governed by The Open Group, such as Sun's Solaris, or it may be an operating system based on the architecture and principles of Unix, such as Linux.  systems. Availability will be announced at a later date.

While pricing is dependent on configuration, the cost of a minimum CrownImage system including CrownImage software, a scanner and Windows NT CrownImage server start at approximately $30,000.

QMS Crown ImageServer print systems, with print speeds from 10 to 45 pages per minute, range in price from, $3,000 to $60,000.
