) has developed a new generation print system capable of much greater overall throughput and performance than that of existing printers.

The new print system is the first to use a 64-bit microprocessor architecture to accomplish the task of producing very high quality, large format laser printed documents at speeds suitable for the needs of larger networks.

The QMS (1) (Minolta-QMS, Inc., Mobile, AL) A manufacturer of laser printers founded in 1977 by Jim Busby. Initially involved with controllers for printing bar codes and labels, it entered the laser printer business in the mid-1980s and set numerous records.  2425 Print System, which was announced today, employs a highly advanced 24 page per minute marking engine See printer engine.  which provides advanced paper handling and finishing capabilities, high resolution output for text, graphics and images and significantly faster print speeds than currently available. Using advanced Crown controller technology, the system can be connected and used with virtually any standard computing platform See platform.  and communications environment.

"We've packed more capability into this print system than any other system in its class," said Richard Bowles, QMS. "To manage all of these new features and provide the document throughput required we've developed a new Crown architecture-based controller that delivers more processing power than any other controller in the desktop printer market.

"The heart of this controller is the new NEC (NEC Corporation, Tokyo, www.nec.com, www.necus.com) An electronics conglomerate known in the U.S. for its monitors. In Japan, it had the lion's share of the PC market until the late 1990s (see PC 98).

NEC was founded in Tokyo in 1899 as Nippon Electric Company, Ltd.
MIPS-based VR4300 microprocessor which delivers 125 Dhrystone MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  of processing power to the system. Users of this new system will realize higher quality output, more document handling features and faster overall document printing speeds than any other 24 page per minute printer on the market today. Because of this throughput, this print system will be particularly well suited for workgroup and departmental printing tasks."

"The QMS 2425 print system sets a new performance standard as the first printer in its class to use a 64 bit microprocessor," said Ray Newstead, VR-Series product marketing manager for NEC Electronics, Inc. "The NEC VR4300 MIPS RISC processor RISC processor [Reduced Instruction Set Computer], computer arithmetic-logic unit that uses a minimal instruction set, emphasizing the instructions used most often and optimizing them for the fastest possible execution.  supports advanced, double-precision floating point operations and has a 64-bit pipeline to ensure high speed data movement, both significant features for high performance laser printer applications."

The QMS 2425 is QMS' newest mid-range printer offering. The QMS 2425 offers capabilities previously not available in a mid-range print system. Advanced document sorting capabilities, coupled with the system's ability to handle a wide variety of paper sizes, make it an ideal choice for multi-user environments.

The 2425 features 1200 x 1200 dpi (dots per inch) print resolution for the highest quality print output. Utilizing QMS' proven Crown architecture for printing, the 2425 can connect seamlessly to a variety of network and computing environments and using the systems broad language support can work with across multiple protocols.

QMS CrownAdmin network administration software enables network managers to fully configure and manage the printer remotely, and create detailed job accounting reports.
